Although my work schedule does in fact play a part in what time I take my
classes, it by no means has any effect on why I am taking the classes. For
Journalism, which is in fact in the Nicholson School of Communication, I tried
to think of the two major areas that go into Journalism as a whole, coming to
the conclusion that Communication and Social Sciences are what really sum
up Journalism. Given that the job I am pursuing is that of a writer for a
newspaper (a film critic, to be more specific), I have built my classes around
what I think I need to learn before completely delving into the field. In my
degree audit, it says that I still need 24 hours of upper level courses, so I
decided to take as many 4 credit hour classes in said disciplines to reduce the
amount of actual classes I need to take (while still holding true to the idea
that I want to be a journalist). Most of the classes I have signed up for or plan
to sign up for (excluding Capstone and Medical Self Assessment) meet both
the requirements for an Interdisciplinary Studies degree as well as the
Universitys requirements, if not one or the other. Still, though, I believe all of
these classes can correlate into me becoming a better writer, given that my
experience is not even a year old professionally. While taking these classes I
will continue writing, something that I think will reflect what I have learned
throughout the classes at the given time. This path of study, along with what
I have already learned, completely prepares me for what lies ahead in the
field of Journalism.
