Technology Uses
This lesson will focus on the teaching of multiplying and dividing fractions in
both algebraic form and word problem form. Students will participate in
interactive note taking, a team building activity through stations, a partner
activity using the Smart Board, and online tool called Funbrain which they
will access through their iPads. Teacher will monitor and evaluate students
progress throughout the duration of the lesson.
The Number System Unit (6.NS)
Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and
division to divide fractions by fractions.
1. Interpret and compute quotients of fractions, and solve word
problems involving division of fractions by fractions, e.g., by using
visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem. For
example, create a story context for (2/3) (3/4) and use a visual fraction
model to show the quotient; use the relationship between multiplication
and division to explain that (2/3) (3/4) = 8/9 because 3/4 of 8/9 is 2/3.
(In general, (a/b) (c/d) = ad/bc.) How much chocolate will each person
get if 3 people share 1/2 lb of chocolate equally? How many 3/4-cup
servings are in 2/3 of a cup of yogurt? How wide is a rectangular strip of
land with length 3/4 mi and area 1/2 square mi?

Students will participate in interactive note taking at the beginning of
the lesson.

Day one:
Day two:
Students will discuss the story problems assigned to them on day one.
Stations will be set by the teacher. Each station will have a different
set of Fraction Manipulatives along with a recording sheet that will be
used to record answers.
Students will be given time at each of the stations and work with their
team members in solving a variety of different fraction problems
involving multiplication and division.
This activity will take up all of Day Two.
Day three:
Students will sign in to their iPads and get on the Funbrain site and
practice solving word problems involving division and multiplication of
fractions. This program is an interactive tool that allows students to
further their learning through fun and engaging games.
Students will be able to team up and take turns coming up to the
Smart Board in order to participate in Click and Drag activity
created by the teacher. During this activity, students will be provided
with a series of different questions and a box filled with answers.
Students are to discuss these questions and answer them with their
team members. Once they decide on their answer, they must find the
answer choice in the answer box provided, click on the solution with
the Smart Board pen and drag it and place it next to the question. If
the answer is correct, the program will automatically link the answer
next to the question. If the answer is incorrect, the program will drag
the answer selected back to the answer box allowing students to try
answering the question again.

Assessment
Exit Ticket will be given on the third day of the lesson. This is an evaluation
tool used by teachers in order to assess students understanding of the
concept taught. The Exit Ticket consists of no more than 3 math problems
involving main concept taught to them. This assessment tool will allow the
teacher to see if students are mastering the lesson or if reteaching has to be
done before moving on to the next concept.
