Search Strategies- Thing 10

I decided to use the Kids InfoBits website to conduct my search. I had never used MeL
Educational Databases before, but I found they were very simple to use! When I begin my
teaching, I will be able to use this site when I ask the students to look up some information. The
appropriateness of this database was exactly what it needed to be for young elementary students.
I admit that I was hesitant, because I am attuned to databases that college students use, so I did
expect that there would be too much content in each link. I am happy to say it was not
overwhelming and it would not be overwhelming for a young student, either! After looking into
the sources, I found that they were credible to use as well, which is necessary if students are
researching a topic.

http://www.timetravelfund.com/
I researched timetravelfund.com and bigredhair.com. After reviewing both sites, as well
as Joyce Valenzas criteria for web evaluation, I can understand why both of these sites are bogus
site. Bigredhair.com had many different links, but each one stated an opinion across the top,
which means that it is not a research site. A research site consists of facts, not opinions. Across
the bottom of the page, it also said that it was a Frank Reade Website. I clicked on the link and it
took me to another site. I am unsure of whether or not Frank Reade is an individual or an
organization, but in either case, the website appeared to be thoughts, not facts.
Timetravelfund.com was a website that, to me, seemed bogus simply by the title! The site
was trying to persuade readers into giving them money for time travel. They listed frequently
asked questions, and one of them was Is this a scam? This was clever on their part, but their
answer was the most interesting. They said no because if it was they would ask for more than ten

bucks. If this was a serious and professional site, I do not believe they would have referred to a
dollar as a buck. The site was also cluttered, in my opinion, which tells me that it was not a
professional that create the site. The site listed many opinions and it was obvious as to what was
fact and what was opinion. Joyce Valenzas critic guide was helpful to understand bogus
websites.

I admit that I am a big proponent of this website! I have used it for my on work when I
am unsure of how to site a website. Citationmachine.net is useful because it allows you to create

a citation in MLA, APA, or Chicago format. It is very easy to use and I believe that elementary
students will be able to understand how to use the website.
