Communication for Children with

CIARA HALL 13115291

WHAT IS AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a group of developmental disabilities that can
cause significant social, communication and behavioural challenges.

OUR STORY
Diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum at age 2
Biggest Issue = Communication
Little Verbal Communication (age 19)
Knowledge of ASD and products associated with communication

FINDINGS
Diagnosis 2-5 (as soon as 18 months)
The Earlier, the Better

Expensive Treatment (esp. outside NHS)

Long Waiting Lists

It can cost about $3.2 million to take care of an

autistic person over his or her lifetime. Caring for all
people with autism over their lifetimes costs an
estimated $35 billion per year (Gans, Michael, 2006).

Period between diagnosis and treatment is vital

The earlier a child with ASD receives the right support
the more likely they will be supported in the right
areas and have more potential to learn. (Maryam. K,
2015)
