Psychological Disorder Analysis
Case Study: 29
Diagnosis and Explanation:
Ken has obsessive compulsive disorder. He is worried about things going wrong. In order to
compensate that he tries to control all that is around him. He controls the situations by making
lists and excessively reminding people.

Behavioral Therapies
Cognitive behavioral therapy is proven to be the most effective form of treatment for OCD. The
therapist works with the patient to find the problem and find concrete way to change their
behavior. They use extended sessions for this. One 80 minutes session as opposed to eight ten
minute sessions.
Cognitive Therapies
Cognitive therapy is paired with behavioral therapy. The therapist works with the patient to find
ways to change their thinking. They work together to find ways to work around their disease.
The try to get the patient to come up with new ways to help

Group Therapies
There are many different support groups for OCD out there. They help find healthy outlets for
the disorder and they allow for individuals suffering from this disease to stay focused and goal
oriented. They also help people learn relaxations methods.

Biological Treatments
Most patients are started on antidepressants such as, Zoloft and Prozac. In most cases these
help with the disorder. A significant amount of work goes into finding the right medication.
Sometimes combinations of medications are needed.

Case Study: 38
Diagnosis and Explanation
Samantha has Post Traumatic Stress disorder. while she was away her house was demolished
by a tornado. She now is plagued by nightmares and occasional flashbacks. This disorder is
triggered by traumatic events; in Samantha's case, the tornado.

Behavioral and cognitive Therapies

someone with PTSD would have to explain how they feel about the traumatic event. the
goal is to understand how certain thoughts make symptoms worse. Therapists will help replace
these thoughts with more positive less distressing thoughts. They will also help find ways to
cope with the feelings that follow the event that happened and keep the person from blaming
themselves for what happened. Cognitive and behavioral therapy helps the person understand
that the traumatic event didn't happen because of them.

Group Therapies
Group therapy will help samantha to talk about what happened. It will give her a
perspective about other people who have the disorder. sharing her story with others will help her
feel comfortable about her trauma and is a coping mechanism for the disorder. It helps build
relationships with others who are going through the same thing that she is. it also helps deal
with symptoms such as guilt, anger and fear.

Biological Treatments
Antidepressants- these medications help with depression and anxiety. It will improve her
sleeping problems and night terrors.
Prazosin- this medication will help with sleep terrors.
Case Study: 2
Diagnosis and Explanation
Dissociative Identity Disorder; we think this because he does things and doesn't remember
them. He also talks about situations he doesn't remember being apart of. He hears people
talking and no one else hears them.
Catatonic Schizophrenia: he went into a state of paralysis, he was alive but he was mute, he
would blankly stare or shut his eyes, didnt have response to stimuli, and would stay like this for
days.

Behavioral Therapies
Behavioral therapies for Dissociative Identity Disorder include artistic and musical outlets
such as music, arts, blogging, painting etc. These help people deal with their multiple alter egos
and give them an outlet to try to remember the alters.
There are few treatments for Catatonic Schizophrenia. One behavioral treatment
includes electroconvulsive therapy. ECT is across the board the most successful treatment for
Catatonic Schizophrenia but it is linked to cause other psychotic disorders.
Cognitive Therapies

ECT can also be used as a cognitive treatment for catatonic schizophrenia. They issue
with this treatment is that it is not as helpful in patients that suffer from prolonged catatonia. ECT
is proven to be the most useful therapy for catatonia, but it often only used as a last resort.

Group Therapies
For DID family therapy is used to help talk about how the person is dealing with their
altars and help explain them to their family members. Its recommended for people because It
also helps the family recognize what is going on within the mind of the person with the disorder.
There are no group therapies for Catatonia. Few people are accurately diagnosed with
this disease
Biological Treatments
Mood stabilizers are used treat Catatonia such as Valproic acid and lithium.
Some patients suffering from catatonia are started on BZPs which is a mixture of medications
over a few months. They switch on and off different medications to treat the disease. Patients
with catatonia that are put on antipsychotics are likely to develop worsening symptoms.
