Category C: Growth and Development Birth

to Thirty-Six Months of Age

Explanation
My sample for Category C: Growth and Development is a Social Emotional Development
Observation and analysis of an infant
It fits the category because it shows development of social and emotional skills
I chose it as the best example of my work because I enjoyed and learned as I observed the child
from the outside looking in you can see a lot more that way instead of being the one interacting
with the child.
It demonstrates the knowledge I gained in the Infant Toddler Development course of the Infant
Toddler Credential.
I learned about some Social Emotional skills this child had and used in play also some areas in
which he may have delays which allowed me to alter the activities and plans to incorporate more
group activities and encourage his participation.
My sample shows my knowledge of the developmental milestones of children birth to thirty-six
months of age by noting certain social and emotional skills the child showed and analyzing how
he could follow directions and seemed to enjoy the same activities as others but not play with
them which was a delay noted in the analysis according to the readings. Also how he showed
pride in his accomplishments and how he could do things on his own. Positive and negative
feelings were expressed in his emotions which seemed to be on track according to the readings.

Summary
Elliot seems to do age appropriate activities in a group setting. He is able to listen
to the simple directions and follow them. He seems to enjoy doing the same
activity as his peers.
However, Elliot does seem to have delays in social skills. In infants, toddlers,
and caregivers chapter 11 page 250 its says by the age of 18 months children
should enjoy exploring objects with another as the basis for establishing
relationships. Elliot, when observed does not include himself in these activities.
During free play time he stands on the outside and watches then chooses to play
independently.
Elliot appears to show pride in his accomplishments. He was happy with the fact
that he was able to wash his hands and they were clean. He is able to show both
positive and negative feelings when expressing his emotions. This seems to be
normal development according to infants, toddlers, and caregivers chapter 10
page 230.
