EAT309 DESIGN
Water gate and Lifting Mechanism
XY building enterprises have secured a bid to design a water gate to replace the existing spill
way as per the dam authoritys renovation plan. As an engineer of the company you are in
charge of the design of the Watergate and the lifting mechanism
The initial site survey provides us with the following data.
Maximum depth of water
d=7m
Width of sluice gate
W = 4.4 m
Minimum height of gate above culvert floor hmin = 0.5 m
Mass of sluice gate m = 1000 kg
The maximum vertical distance, S, over which the gate has to operate, is 2.5 metres. That is to
from hmin = 0.5 m to hmax = 3 m
The coefficient of friction between the water gate and the guide rails is found to vary between 0.2
(recently lubricated) and 0.6 (dry) and also to depend upon frequency of usage and
maintenance.
A gear and allied system is decided to be used to transmit power from an appropriate electric
motor to the lifting mechanism.
DESIGN PORTFOLIO, ASSESSMENT & MARKING SCHEME
1) A tentative design specification of the water gate and the system. (Please note that this is
a design specification and therefore needs to provide details of what it is you are
required to design. It should include limitations imposed upon the design by the
conditions described above. It must not be written as a product specification, i.e. a
document which provides details of an existing product)
(Group 15%)
2) Design calculations to determine the force required to lift the water gate taking account of
all of the forces acting on the gate, in the worst case conditions. The drag effects of the
water on the gate as it lifted can be ignored but the frictional force must be taken into
account.

3) Select an appropraite motor to take up the duty of lifting and lowering the water gate with
the required specifications and justify your selection
(Group 10%)
4) Do a literature survey on three materials that could be used for the manufacturing of the
gate along with various protection methods( at least 3) used with a cost analysis.
(Individual 10%)
5) Design a gearbox to achieve the overall ratio required taking into consideration the torque
to be transmitted by each gear. The gear ratio can be achieved in as many stages as
possible, as long as it is costs must be kept to a acceptable limit and the fewer the stages
the lower the cost incurred. All gears used must be properly listed and specified by part
number, module, torque capacity and material used.
(Group 20%)
6) Prepare a detailed layout drawing (2-D) of the design showing critical dimensions to
ensure that its feasibility.

7) Concepts designs, for some means of holding the gate in the required position. It is not
necessary to provide detailed drawings for this, sketches with appropriate supporting
notes are all that is required.

Avoiding Plagiarism Accusations
Please note that whilst some notes and materials will be provided to support this task it
is expected that you will carry out your own research and use a variety of information
sources to complete the task. However, all of your work must be presented in your own
words and not taken directly from any other source. All sources you have used in your
search must be clearly and appropriately referenced using the Harvard referencing
system and a lisy of references included in the back of each submission. Using sources
which have not been appropriately referenced or taking any data directly from any
source which you include in your work will be regarded as plagiarism and may result in
you failing this part of the report or even the whole module. It is acceptable to use
quotes, photographs and/or diagrams from other sources, where appropriate, but these
must be properly referenced. Any quotations you wish to use from external sources must
be less than 200 words in total for any submission of your report and again must be cited
and referenced correctly. All quotations must be shown within quotation marks.
As in the real world of engineering design it is important to provide exactly what the
customer has asked for. You need only provide answers to the questions asked.
Additional answers to questions not asked will not be marked and will therefore not be
awarded any marks. If you are in any doubt as to what has been asked, please make
further enquiries to obtain clarification.
