There has been a steady rise in the amount of funding since then (2012-15YTD).
Simultaneously, number of new companies formed have declined which is indicative of the start of market consolidation.
The various business models that exist here have differentiated themselves from each other on the basis logistics, most efficient of
which appears to be where last mile delivery is not done by the company.
In Aug 2015, GoodEggs had to shut down all operations out of San Francisco Area.
While, In Sep 2015, Grubmarket, which works on a no-warehouse model, announced a fund raising of $10M.

The Recipe Box Model has recently attracted a lot of attention from investors. A marked rise in the amount of funding in 2015 is
suggestive of the same.
Blue Apron and Hello Fresh attained unicorn status, after raising $135M and $85M respectively in 2015.
Most companies in this space rely on a similar supply chain but differ in terms of product. For example meals are now designed based
on food preferences of customers (pescatarian, for-children, gluten-free, paleo etc.).
There has been an evolution in the type of ingredients sent in meal boxes as well. Earlier companies used to send pre-cut or prewashed or pre-measured or a combination of these in the kit, now most send ingredients that are pre-measured and require
negligible or no preparation before cooking.

Recent Trends shaping the Industry

1.

Increase in kinds of Business Models

The grocery industry is witnessing a trend towards becoming technology driven from the traditional brick and mortar retail
sector. A combination of factors is responsible for this growth - new technologies, expanding online offerings, increased
efficiencies at multiple levels of value chain and consumer preferences for convenience are a few important ones.
Customers ordering groceries online, are likely to have a preferred store due to the time spent on creating profiles, searching
for products, adding billing information etc. This represents a huge threat to grocery retailers that are not yet online.
Business models working successfully in countries like the US and UK are now being replicated globally. For example Instacart,
Peapod, Farmigo, Goodeggs are landmark companies in their segments.
Trends that can be seen in terms of diversity of business models are Traditional offline retailers can now see themselves competing with pure online players.
Established ecommerce companies such as Amazon have now stepped into the e-grocery domain.
Pure online players have adopted to varied business models such as:
Hyperlocal Model they employ personal shoppers to shop and deliver from partnered stores.
Online retail model they sell entirely online and have dedicated facilities for deliveries and other operational.
Next, the niche recipe box model that focuses on solving difficulties with home cooking.

16

Grocery Tech Report, December 2015

Recent Trends shaping the Industry

2.

Rise in the mobile commerce business

The global mobile purchases is estimated to be of worth 100 billion by end of 2015, equivalent to 8% of total ecommerce sales.
Because of this trend, online retailers are now focussing on enhancing the user experience to gain advantage.
The companies have to constantly innovate ways to make the offline- online barrier as seamless as possible. The major challenge
is the large digital basket. Linking products, gauging predictability by analysing customer purchasing habits can potentially reduce
fill- time of each basket.

3.

Optimization in delivery models

Majority of the e-grocery companies work on either the pick up model or the home delivery model. However, for the businesses
the delivery model often makes less economic sense due to low population densities, complicated logistics required for fresh
produce, lack of scale, and also unwillingness of customers to pay extra for delivery. Pick-up points, on the other hand are more
viable in terms of operational costs and initial investments. France, for example has a dense network of pick up points.
Here pickup model works better over home-delivery model.
Other trends in delivery models that have sprouted in recent past are those from offline retailers. While now they offer in store
pick ups, a few have also outsourced delivery to other parties. Morrison for instance partnered with Ocado in 2014 to boost
sales. A few hyper local companies offer personal shopper to shop and keep orders ready at stores for customers to pick up.
Therefore, e-grocery companies will have to come up with innovative distribution processes that can possess a profitable mix of
offerings
