Assignment-C1 "Engineering, the Profession"

Abstract:
The purpose of this assignment is to obtain knowledge and become
aware of Engineering especially the student`s current chosen field. It is a
very genuine step to initiate this course by doing this interesting assignment
as well as the students have increasing demands to know more about the
engineering fields in these phases. On the other hand, they have already
chosen their majors as well as they portrait a very clear and high picture in
their minds about working life in the future by asking people who got the
experience. Moreover, here is the problem that I got a random, weak, unclear
and poor information. Therefore, I hope that, this assignment will muster up
my courage to search in a more scientific way. Also to go profoundly inside
my specialization. In addition, this research have endorsed my ideas and
perceptions, Furthermore, by conducting this assignment I gained more
details about the skills which I have got or which I need to get in term of
chosen field.
I know and appreciated by doing this assignment. I could get to a
manifest route to gain my knowledge about my current chosen specialization
or field, Electrical Engineering. Moreover, as I mentioned previously, I cited
data about engineering in general, then I took your attention to the
paramount aspects of my specialization. These aspects are initiated from
general Engineering to what is Electrical Engineering, How Electrical engineers
work, what type of projects are involved in it, the kind of companies which
hire EEs, after that I will talk about a professional organization in Saudi
Arabia or globally related, names of professional society and how the labor
market seems to Electrical engineers and I will find out more important
elements such as salaries and the field statistics.

Work:
Before I take u to the real objective I really be honored to present some more but simple
information, its begin with, Albert Einstein, one of the world's greatest scientists, hit the nail
right on the head when he pondered the question 'what is engineering? In simple terms,
engineers identify a problem, and come up with a solution often creating something completely
new in the process. Traditionally, engineering is about infrastructure. Engineers were known to
create bridges and vehicles that got us from A to B faster more efficiently. Now engineering is
acknowledged as a discipline that opens up opportunities and creates technology and products
that help make our lives easier. Engineers are shaping the future by applying their skills to almost
everything you can think of, from medicine to renewable energy, food technologies to
sustainable mining. There really is no limit to what engineers can do [1]. In simple form
Engineers are problem solvers, organizers, communicators, calculators and designers. They are
capable of clearly defining a problem and its relevant constraints (such as time, cost, etc.) and
providing a simple solution. A senior engineer will usually perform less technical work
(calculations and designs) but instead focus on managing a project or team of engineers [2]. Now
the real objective will be discussed based on some specific questions that are prepared on paper.

1. Best Specialization and Related Skills

First of all, I think that every technical skill could be gained by studying, practicing,
getting experiences by keep on working and the most important thing by asking and
investigating. Therefore, nothing is easy as well as nothing is impossible all we need is work. I
have some technical skills that came up with me from the previous sources. For example, I have
the ability to deal with computer skillfully especially Microsoft office programs "Word, Excel
and PowerPoint". In addition, I got the experience of using some engineering programs related to
electrical engineering like programming languages for instance java and C. Also, I am capable of
using another simple and common global programing language called Matlab. Moreover, I have
some skills that I almost all the time take for granted. For instance, some aspects of mathematical
skills, the ability of quick learning and researching and the desire of investigating and looking for
different solutions for one problem. Trying to resolve the troubles over studying of electronics
and research on it, make something new from my own mind to present it to our society for
betterment of our future, Thats why I want to be an electrical engineer and I believe I can do my
best on this field far more than other fields.

2. Weak technical skills and best specialization match for it.

Some important skills I lack, may affect my performance these skills are, using
mathematical calculations quickly, concentrating writings, reading comprehension, time
managing, distances estimations and hopelessly understanding maps and streets. In addition, I
2

have some social skills which I lack or even weak with. For example, speaking confidently
without shyness or fears so that sometimes reduces the quality of my presentations. Also, I lack
interpersonal skills particularly like being out of control when I am stressing, negotiating and
leadership personality. And the best fit field for that all above weak mention aspects is industrial
engineering.

3. Social skills and fit specialization for it.

When talking about social skills I cannot know specifically what of these skills I have by
myself. Therefore, I ask some of my friends about these skills and their replies was that "I am
good at communication, easy to interact with, active in listening and motivates normally and
capable of bearing the responsibility". Referring to these technical and social skills, weather I
have or lack, I found that electrical engineering is nearly fits me and my skills and desires.
However, I have many important skills but it is not too late.

In figure 1, some skills are illustrated by Holland University for electrical engineers. It shows
that electrical engineers must be at the first investigative followed by realistic 27%, social 17%,
artistic 11%, enterprising 7%, convential 1%.
Furthermore, there are some creditable sources that reveal skills for electrical engineers
to have for betterment of his job life, these skills are following as, Critical Thinking-Using logic
and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or
approaches to problems. Reading Comprehension - Understanding written sentences and
paragraphs in work related documents. Complex Problem Solving - Identifying complex
problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement
3

solutions. Listening - Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to
understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at
inappropriate times. Monitoring/Assessing performance of yourself, other individuals, or
organizations to make improvements or take corrective action. Systems Analysis - Determining
how a system should work and how changes in conditions, operations, and the environment will
affect outcomes. Quality Control Analysis - Conducting tests and inspections of products,
services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance. Repairing - Repairing machines or
systems using the needed tools. Troubleshooting - Determining causes of operating errors and
deciding what to do about it. Equipment Maintenance - Performing routine maintenance on
equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed [4].
There are some other prerequisites for electrical engineers as:

Knowledge:
Electrical Engineers commonly recognized by most employers. Typically, you will not
be required to have all of the knowledge listed to be a successful performer. Recruitment and
selection standards for an individual state job must be based on the specific knowledge, skills,
and abilities for that job as indicated in the job announcement and job description in the
Employee Work Profile.
The Knowledge of:
1. Practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying
principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various
goods and services.
2. Circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and
software, including applications and programming.
3. Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
4. Structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of
words, rules of composition, and grammar
5. Design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical
plans, blueprints, drawings, and models
6. And prediction of physical principles, laws, their interrelationships, and applications to
understanding fluid, material, and atmospheric dynamics, and mechanical, electrical,
atomic and sub- atomic structures and processes.

7. Transmission, broadcasting, switching, control, and operation of telecommunications

systems.
8. Raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for
maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.

INTERESTED:
Like people, occupations have traits or characteristics. These characteristics give
important clues about the nature of the work and work environment, and give you an
opportunity to match your own personal interests to a specific occupation. When you
choose a job in an occupation that matches your own interests you have taken an
important step in planning a successful and rewarding career. The electrical engineer
occupation has the following characteristics:
o Investigative Investigative occupations frequently involve working with ideas,
and require an extensive amount of thinking. These occupations can involve
searching for facts and figuring out problems mentally.
o Realistic Realistic occupations frequently involve work activities that include
practical, hands-on problems and solutions. They often deal with plants, animals,
and real-world materials like wood, tools, and machinery. Many of the
occupations require working outside, and do not involve a lot of paperwork or
working closely with others [5].

4. The Field Electrical Engineer work on:

Electrical engineers work on a variety of projects, such as computers, robots, cell phones,
cards, radars, navigation systems, wiring and lighting in buildings and other kinds of electrical
systems. Electrical engineers start out a project by defining what a new electronics should be
able to do. They will then design the circuits and parts of the electronics using a computer. They
will create a prototype and test the product to improve it. Most products do not work initially or
have some bugs that need to be fixed. The electrical engineer needs to figure out the problem and
make the product work. There are many sub-disciplines of electrical engineering. Some electrical
engineers specialize exclusively in one sub-discipline, while others specialize in a combination
of sub-disciplines. The most popular sub-disciplines are [6]:

Electronic Engineer
- deals with electronic circuits such as resistors, capacitors, inductors, transistors and
diodes.

Microelectronics Engineer
- deals with design and micro-fabrication of tiny electronic circuit components.

Signal Processing Engineer

- deals with signals, such as analog or digital signals.

Power Engineer
- deals with electricity and design of related electrical devices such as transformers,
generators, motors and power electronics.

Control Engineer
- deals with design of controllers that cause systems to behave in a certain way, using
micro-controllers, programmable logic controllers, digital signal processors and electrical
circuits.

Telecommunications Engineer
- deals with transmission of information via a cable or optical fiber.

Instrumentation Engineer
- deals with the design of measuring devices for pressure, flow and temperature. This
involves a deep understanding of physics.

Computer Engineer
- deals with the design of computers and computer hardware.

5. Typical project time duration

The electrical engineering field encompasses several sub-disciplines including: power,
control, electronics, microelectronics, signal processing, communication, instrumentation, and
computers. As an electrical engineer, you can work on the project somewhere like in the offices,
labs, or industrial plants of various industries including: the manufacturers of electrical
components and computer equipment, industrial machinery, medical and scientific instruments,
transportation, communication, computer related sectors, the federal government, and utility
firms. The projects you may work on can range from designing a telecommunication system or
6

the operation of electric power stations to the lighting and wiring of buildings, the design of
household appliances, and the electrical control of industry machinery. And every project may
take its own specific time. As we see above that the Electrical engineering has many sectors to
work on and each of sector has its complex manufacturing procedure for applying on project,
thus there is no fixed time for the project [7].

6&7. Sort of companies hire Electrical engineers and Salary of EEs:

The average salary for an Electrical Engineer is SAR 111,459 per year. Pay for this job
rises steadily for more experienced workers, but goes down noticeably for the few employees
with more than 20 years' experience [8]. People in this job generally don't have more than 20
years' experience. The skills that increase pay for this job the most are Matlab, Engineering
Design, and C++. He often will design, assemble and test new devices. Two of
the gigantic companies which hire electrical engineers is Aramco and Saudi
Electricity Company. Join Saudi Aramco, and youll be surprised at how much
we can offer. Alongside the opportunity to work on the worlds largest oil
reserves in a unique and challenging desert environment, youll discover
theres plenty to do even when youre not maintaining our pipelines [9]. As a
global leader in the energy industry, we have the resources to cater to your
every need. So whether you want to progress your career on innovative and
state-of-the-art projects, or explore a wealth of leisure activities on your
own, with colleagues or family with Saudi Aramco, you can do it all. The
Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) in recent times rewarded Worley Parsons an
Integrated EPCM Services Contract for two large 1650 MW combined cycle
gas turbine based power plants in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The first one
will be built in Riyadh to be online in 2016, and the second one will be online
in 2017 at a location in the Kingdom yet to be announced.

8&9. Professional society & The Number of Electrical

Engineers:
I finally found out after too struggle some graduated Engineering students from King
Abdul-Aziz Universitys Alumni relation unit. The recorded years are from 2007 to 2011

The table shows that in 2007 the number of students were normal. In the year of 2008 it
got to the maximum point so far, in the year of 2011 the numbers of students decreased to its
minimum point so far.
The Saudi Council of Engineers was issued through the Royal Decree
M/36 on 26/09/1423 in agreement with Council of Ministers Decree no. 226
dated 13/09/1423. Saudi Council of Engineers is a scientific professional
organization that aims to encourage the engineering profession and do no
matter what may be essential to build up and improve its standards and
those practicing it [11]. Saudi Arabia will have to stay for 70 years to grasp
self-sufficiency in Saudi engineers, whose numbers at present does not go
above 30,000, the board chairman of the Saudi Council of Engineers (SCE)
has believed. Hamad bin Nasir Al-Shaqawis remarks came at a press
conference in Riyadh ahead of the 16th GCC engineering forum to be held in
Jeddah on Feb. 24 under the auspices of the Custodian of the Two Holy
Mosques King Abdullah [12]. The Saudi Arabia Section of IEEE was
established on May 04, 1981, and through the past 22 years has grown in to
a forum with over 4200 members over the years. Currently there are 1200
active members. There are seven Society Chapters and several sub-entity
groups including KFUPM Students Chapter, the IEEE GOLD group, Industrial
Relations Officer and the Standards Group under the Section [13].

10&11. EEs Job Outlook and Job Market:

Electrical and electronics engineering graduates should have favorable employment
opportunities. The number of job openings resulting from employment growth and the need to
replace electrical engineers who transfer to other occupations or leave the labor force is expected
to be in rough balance with the supply of graduates. Employment of electrical and electronics
engineers is projected to grow 4 percent from 2012 to 2022, slower than the average for all
occupations. Job growth is expected because of electrical and electronics engineers versatility in
developing and applying emerging technologies. On the other hand, employment growth could
be tempered by slow growth or decline in most manufacturing sectors in which electrical and
8

electronics engineers are employed. Job growth for electrical and electronics engineers will
largely occur in engineering services firms, because more companies are expected to cut costs by
contracting engineering services rather than directly employing engineers. These engineers will
also experience job growth in computer systems design, as these industries continue to
implement more powerful portable computing devices. The rapid pace of technological
Innovation and development will likely drive demand for electrical and electronics engineers in
research and development, an area in which engineering expertise will be needed to develop
distribution systems related to new technologies [14].

Conclusion:
After too much strive I have come up to realize and know my desirable field and found
more details that what an electrical engineers do and how does he do, and how many sectors are
embedded in one field, which one is for which purpose, I have found out some info about others
engineering fields too, for the future if I want to choose another field I will already have
information. Moreover I found some details about companies regionally or globally that which
sort of engineers they need and. I researched about the monthly or annually average wage of
electrical engineers. Found some interesting facts, that how many electrical engineers graduated
from king Abdul-Aziz University in a few years recorded data, and also how many electrical
engineers are recorded in Saudi engineering council so for.
To sum up, I think I did too much struggle and did great job to find above data about my
favorite major that I see myself as it, and thanks for the amazing assignment which dragged me
or in other words it forced me to look for gathering great and significant information.
