FATIMA-AL-FIHRI

There are so many people who have earned respect by contributing their efforts in different fields
usually men contributions become famous than women and their names highlighted in the
golden pages of history , we are unaware with the names of women who had done unbelievable
and remarkable contributions like ,
*MARIE CURIE, she was the first woman who wins the first noble prize in chemistry and
physics.
*MARIA MICHELL, she was the first American woman professional astronomer etc.
If we talk about contribution of great Muslim women,
Fatima al-Fihri name comes on the top of the list. Fatima al-fihri also known as um al
banain, mother of boy. Fatima al-Fihri is considered among great women in Muslim history,
she was not just the typical house woman but she was the woman of inspiration, she was famous
because of her great contribution in establishing first degree-granting university in the history
name Qarrawiyyan
Fatima al-Fihri was born in Tunisia in 800 CE, she was daughter of Muhammad, her family
migrated from Tunisia to fez in

morocco (ruler era of idrees II) in early ninth century.

Fatimas father was hardworking person who struggled to change the destiny, after migration
with his lots of effort he became wealthy merchant.
Fatima al-Fihri got married after migration but later her husband, brother and father died, after
that only Fatima and her sister Maryam left, they both got inherited with great fortune and
wealth, inherited amount was enough for them to survive independently. Both of the sisters
decided to utilize the wealth for the benefits of the community. Maryam observed that the
Mosques in Fez are not enough to meet the growing population so , she built beautiful and
tremendous

Al Andulus mosque in 245AH , Fatima also decided to built another mosque ,

which is considered as the largest mosque Al Qarrawiyyan located in north Africa , later on
this mosque becomes the university , first academic degree granting university established by
woman Al Qarrawiyyan university in 859 , this university taught grammar , science , maths ,
medicines etc subjects.
Guinness book of world record has also recorded that qarrawiyyan university is the most oldest
in the world which is still providing education to students, now to honour Fatimas great
contribution ,a program is developed with 20 universities of north Africa and Europe to promote
higher education.
Woman like Fatima al-Fihri are the inspiration for every one, she has done commendable efforts
and proved herself.
