Racial and Educational Inequalities
Is it not amazing how much the world has developed but yet inequality among race and
education continue to grow? Discrimination among race and unfair education continue to
worsen throughout todays society. In our culture, the gaps between groups are obvious. Unfair
circumstances create disadvantages that lead to people getting killed, treated differently from
others, and kids not getting a proper education that they most certainly deserve. Today,
discrimination continues to become increasingly evident through television, social media, and
world events.
Racial disputes in our society are between people of all ethnicities over almost anything
today. It happens all over the world, and the consequences of these disputes lead to
discrimination, jail time, and even the loss of lives. Evidence of racial inequalities is obvious
throughout todays media and news. Recently in Chicago, a news story stated, One instance
includes a black women accusing Van Dyke of repeatedly directing racial slurs at her as police
searched her apartment, (Chicago Police Officer Who Shot Teen Subject of Civilian
Complaints). This explains one of many cases where Chicago Police used excessive verbal
force against other people because of their race, even when they were clearly doing nothing
wrong. Another example includes a police officer responding, N*****, I can find something to
lock you up on, and later stating, its a lack of personal responsibility amongst African
Americans that cause them to experience disappropriate harm, (Towns, Cariman). This again

shows an officer verbally abusing black people when they are innocent and not deserving of such
harsh words. In To Kill a Mockingbird, it says, but now hes turned out a nigger lover, well
never be able to walk the streets of Maycomb again. Hes ruining the family (Lee 96). The
book also states, You aint got no business brinin white chullum here (Lee 48). This
exemplifies how racism can most definitely be double sided. Atticus is discriminated for standing
up for a black man while the kids are discriminated for being white at Cals church. These are
just a few of the many ways disparities persist among race today. In addition to racism,
inequalities in education are raising huge problems throughout the world.
Many things effect a childs education, including their family history, location, and their
financial situation. These things are causing some innocent children to have obstacles when it
comes to learning. One website states, Whether in educational attainment between income
groups inequality persists, (Social and Educational Disadvantage). This shows how in our
society today, there is a lot of inequality in the way students are taught because of their economic
background. If they do not have a lot of money, they dont receive as high of an education. They
miss out on valuable skills and lessons, even though their financial situation is not something
they can change. Another article stated, the achievement between more affluent and less
privileged children is wider than ever, and it later says, The children of college-educated
parents are twice as likely to go to college as the children of high school graduates and seven
times more likely than those of high school dropouts, (Porter, Eduardo). This article shows how
when families are financially challenged, their kids miss out on opportunities and cannot achieve
as well. It also exemplifies that when a kids parents have trouble with school and getting and
education, they pay the price. They do not receive as good of an education because of their
parents, and that is something they cannot change. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Scouts teacher tells

her, Now tell your father not to teach you anymoreIll try to undo the damage, and Scout
later says, Miss Caroline told me to tell my father not to teach me it would interfere with my
learning, (Lee 22). These quotes from the book show how Scout is being shamed for reading
above average. Her teacher is basically telling her to stop learning how to read so that she can be
at the same level as other kids. This is discrimination against an intelligent child just for a
teachers convince. All the examples are just a couple of the many ways inequalities are evident
in education today.
Education and race have huge impacts on our society and they should be fair. Racial
disputes should not still be occurring today, and people should definitely not still be getting
discriminated for something they have no control over. Education should be fair, because this is
the future generation at hand, and they need to have a bright future. Racism is causing innocent
people to get hurt and even die while innocent kids are having a disadvantage at a good
education, something no child should ever be denied. The world today is preparing a biased,
racist, uneducated future, and changing that has to begin today.
