Amy Swain got married (a bit like Peggy Sue)

On Sunday 3rd May 2015 Amy Swain, previously of
Main Street, South Scarle married Jack Thomas from
Lincoln at All Saints Church, Swinderby.
The day started out very wet but had dried up before
she left for the church and the sun was shining when
they came out after their marriage ceremony.
The reception was held at "The White Heather"
near Caenby Corner, Lincoln and was followed by a
2-week honeymoon in Mexico.
Many of you may have seen their dog "Walter" going
for walks with "Ruby" while he holidayed here in
South Scarle.

Tripping the Light Fantastic!

The Barn Dance was huge fun with an excellent Pea and Pie
Supper.
It also raised a total of 518, which will be put towards the
church organ restoration fund.

Awesome Norsesome
How can three Blokes become a
cast of gods, dwarves and mythical
women? I dont know but Temple
Theatre managed the trick with
consummate and convincing skill. I
loved Unmythable but enjoyed
Norsesome even more! I just cant
wait to see what they will do next.

Rodeo Jo
16 May saw Rodeo Jo return to the
community centre, it was nice of her
say that this is one her favourite
venues. She is a wonderful singer,
ably assisted by other singers from
floor as she toured the packed room, particularly calling on one of
her friends, Alan Carter. She later called upon a few country music
enthusiasts to come up on stage and have go. A jolly good night
was had by all and it would be lovely to have her back again for a
further visit.

St Helenas Day 23rd of May

We gathered. We sang hymns with gusto. Most of us even prayed. Why? It was St Helenas day

and another opportunity for South Scarle to do what it does best Celebrate.
The Full English Breakfast was very good (thank you to the chefs).
The affirmation of community was all it should be and much more besides.
If you have not yet done one of these village events your next chance is 20 th
September for the Harvest Celebration. Dont miss it. I wont.
232 was raised so thank you everybody.

The Greater StitchwortStellaria holostea

Well Sherlock Anne Turner and Dr
Katie Holmes debated the identity of
this plant at great length. The clues
were:
It was growing on Plot Lane, in the
grass in one large clump only (and also
one opposite Bob Greens cottage on
Swinderby Road)
It was growing in the shade of trees.
The white petals are quite divided and longer than the sepals. It has got smooth leaves and
stems unlike another close relative - The Mouse Ear. The flowers shine out almost luminously
and are very abundant.
Having established its identity, we also discovered that this plant could be called: Wedding Cakes,
Star of Bethlehem, Daddys - shirt-buttons, and Snapdragon. The latter is due to the loud popping
the seedcases make as they explode in June. It is known to grow in woods, roadside verges,
hedgerows and grassy banks. Until it flowers, it is also easily missed. Now an interesting fact is that
this plant is edible. The shoots can be chopped into salads, steamed or quickly boiled. It was also
used to cure bone problems, hence the Latin name, and, boiled with acorns, was a cure for stitch
like pains. If you want to blame anyone for all the rain we have endured lately, then think on,
because Sherlock Turner picked it and legend has it that the picking provokes thunderstorms!

Who needs a Fairy Godmother to get to the Ball (Tractor Run)?

Well all of us the way the weather was to start but one young man found a very special fairy??!
Richard Clay (an experienced tractor driver) watched longingly as the 36 vintage tractors
assembled. He remarked to all who would listen I really want to go on the tractor run. I would
(had I been there and employed by tabloid) report a sparkle of fairy dust and the sound of tinkling
bells. In the twinkling of an eye he had the keys to an 04 John Deer tractor his wish granted.
His Fairy Godmother? Probably one of the two who provide the venue (and this year the dry roof)
that makes this event possible. The dry roof ensured that the bacon butties and tea and cakes were
up to their usual excellent standard.

From the Chair

It was raised up at a recent Parish Meeting about poor parking along Main St.
Without wishing to preach and point fingers would all residents endeavour to have a little
consideration for others and park sensibly and not on footpaths or across peoples driveways.
If we need emergency vehicles to access Main St. poor and inconsiderate parking can lead to
major difficulties.
Please: It will make peoples lives considerably easier. Many thanks David Clarke

Maureen Sutton Is Back - 7.30pm, Friday 11th September, St Helena's Church.

Brute and Beastly Remedies

After her very entertaining talk 2 years ago Maureen Sutton has agreed to come back to South
Scarle. Henry the V111 spoke of Lincolnshire as being a brute and `beastly county` hence the title
of the talk. Information has been gathered from the medieval era, the Elizabethan era and remedies
prior to the NHS.
Many of these remedies beggar belief and only those in dire need would dare to try them. Some
are positively revolting, many are eye-watering, and quiet a few are highly amusing. It should be
just as entertaining and thought provoking as her previous talk and should have you laughing out
loud.
Maureen will bring with her some memorabilia to illustrate her talk and evoke memories, some may
be rather unpleasant! Cod liver oil. Senna pods and sulphur but she promises not to bring any fresh
urine or fried mouse. She says she will also sing a few ditties and folk songs connected with
remedies.
Maureen says that she welcomes anyone bringing a remedy or memorabilia that they no longer
need.
Maureen is often heard on radio Lincolnshire and gives talks in many areas of the county and
beyond. She also writes poetry some in dialect.

Watch Your Chimneys!

Jackdaws are persistent indeed bloody-minded they only wait for the smoke to clear before returning to
a chosen chimney. If you do not permanently exclude
them they will fill your chimney with all sorts of nesting
material, which will burn like a torch. You have been
warned!
