Allegra Coe

Distinguishing characteristics of persuasion
Deconstructs and analyzes problem or issue
Acknowledges and synthesizes opposing views
Incorporates researched evidence
Proposes appropriate solution
Applies paper writing strategies
This quiz is a short formative assessment on the basics of persuasive paper
writing. (These concepts would be covered through my enabling objectives)
This quiz would be given at the end of the unit, after discussing and doing
activities about basic persuasive paper writing. In other words, this would be
Quiz A in a Quiz A-B-C structure. The purpose of the quiz is just to assess
basic knowledge of persuasive paper writing. This quiz should specifically
cover the first, third and a little of the fourth enabling objectives.
A brief note: Writing is highly subjective. So many aspects of writing are
conditional on other aspects. It was very difficult for me to write concrete,
objective questions about something so subjective. If I have missed
something or contradicted myself, please let me know.
Since the subject matter of this test is about basic facts and knowledge of
persuasive writing, I selected question types geared more toward concrete
knowledge: true/false, pick one/pick multiple, fill in the blank and matching.
I tried to make the questions more sophisticated as the test progressed.
Persuasive Writing

Test 1

1. The thesis is always in the first paragraph of the paper.

True
False
Feedback: Answer: False.
The thesis may be in the first paragraph in closed form, but in open
form
writing, the thesis is at the end.
Rhetorical Triangle
2. Please draw a line from the term on the left to its appropriate
translation on the right.

Logos
Ethos
Pathos

Emotion
Logic
Ethics

Feedback: Answer: LogosLogic, PathosEmotion, EthosEthics.

Remember, each part of the rhetorical triangle must balance the
others
3. In the context of legitimate persuasion, the opposing views positon
should be treated with: (select all that apply)
scorn
subjectivity
respect
indecision
disrespect

insincerity
objectivity
nonchalance
accuracy
framing

Feedback: Answers are: respect, accuracy and objectivity.

The credibility of your argument will be judged in part by the way
you construct
and portray the opposing position. Showing the
opposing position as objectively
as possible, while being
respectful and accurate will help your credibility as a
writer by
demonstrating to your readers you are trustworthy and ethical.
4. The sections of a persuasive paper are, in order (select one from the
drop down menu for each blank):
<Choices are: body, opposition position, solution, sources, outline.>
Introduction, __________________________, ________________________,
___________________________, conclusion.

Feedback: Answers are: body, opposition position, solution.

Sources are critical, but are to be integrated into the paper to
support your
position and views. The section on sources is
the Works Cited page, which is
its own page and comes after
the conclusion. Outlines are extremely helpful for
organizing
thoughts and ideas and should be used during the drafting process,
but are not a required component of persuasive essay writing.

5. How many sources should you use for a persuasive paper? (Select
one):
It depends on page length
It depends on topic
It depends on sources available
It depends on the weather
Feedback: Both A and B are correct.
The standard is one to two sources per page, so the required length of
your essay is a critical factor in how many sources you need. But topic plays
an important role as wellthe scope and focus of your topic, as well as its
depth, will influence how many sources may be required. However, the
number of sources available is irrelevant since the internet is at your
fingertips with countless sources on demand, anytime. And while we all enjoy
writing on a sunny (or cloudy) day, the weather has nothing to do with your
sources.
