Its very rare that a race

horse wins the Triple Crown
- the Kentucky Derby, the
Preakness, and the Belmont
Stakes - and rarer still that
we locals know someone who
was able to witness it, and
even rarer still that it WAS
some locals who witnessed
it. Steve and Marvetta Volker were in New York when
American Pharaoh won the
Belmont Stakes on June 6,
2015, clinching the Triple
Crown win. Its been 37
years since the last horse,
Affirmed, won the glory.
The Volkers planned the
trip back in February, never
imagining theyd get to witness history in the making.
The roar of the crowd was
deafening when American
Pharaoh crossed the finish
line, commented Marvetta.

Following his plan: Sheriff answers

the call to serve his community

By
Nancy
ZoellnerHogland, The Missouri
Sheriff Magazine Editor,

Atchison County Sheriff
Dennis Martin feels that
hes always had a call on
his life to serve the public.
He initially answered by
working as an EMT for the
Atchison-Holt Ambulance
District. Then in 1989, he
was asked to go to work as a
reserve officer for the Tarkio
Police Department and he
jumped at the chance.
It was another opportunity. Not being clich, I
believe it was a God-given
opportunity. It was where
I needed to be at that time
in my life, he said, adding
that, in addition to working
part-time as a reserve, he attended a basic 120-hour law
enforcement academy while
continuing to work full-time
as an EMT.
Then one day in late 1991
or early 1992, while standing in the barn washing
down the ambulance, he was
approached by two women
from the Atchison County

Democratic Committee asking if hed consider running

for sheriff. Since it wasnt
the first - or last - time he
was asked that question, he
decided to seriously consider
how he should respond. He
and his wife, Phyllis, talked
about it, prayed about it and
finally determined that if he
wasnt supposed to be sheriff, the public wouldnt vote
him into office.
He won the election and
took office at one minute after midnight on January 1,
1993 in the middle of a blizzard.
I was driving a 1970
Mercury four-door sedan at
the time and that became
my patrol vehicle. I had a
red light on the dash and
a hand unit and that, literally, was how I began, he
laughed. It wasnt until mid1995 that he was even reimbursed for all the business
miles he drove. Previously,
he received mileage only for
civil process or when he responded to calls for service.
Although the deputies drove
