Creative response to The Matrix

Cody lied on the bed. His eyes staring at the life support machine. He had lost count of
the number of beeps that came out of it. It was as if time was eternal, the space and
dimension around him morphing endlessly. Then he wold return to attention, realizing his
imagination had took the better of him again. Today would be a most important day for
him. Delegates from Thundercorps Foundation were to meet him. With them they bear an
offer, a vision of the future.
Soon after, there was a knock on the door.
Come in! yelled Cody.
The door opened, as Maria, the housemaid led the delegates into the dim, dark room. The
only thing lighting the room were the countless monitor screens bearing different scales,
digits and information essential to Codys survival. In the centre of the room lied Cody,
looking frigid, drowning in helplessness and immobility.
The delegates were all in dark suits, which terrified Cody even more, reminding him of
how close his time was due. The meeting felt more like a funeral. His fear and paranoia
could be observed by the sudden spike in the readings of his life support monitors.
The head delegate, in smart, dark uniform and a neat hair, opened his suitcase. The head
delegate removed a stack of paper from the suitcase and removed a pen from his left
pocket.
As usual procedure, Thundercorps Foundation would only proceed in the following
procedure after the subject has agreed on the following terms and conditions........
Just let me sign the bloody papers and get on with it! yelled Cody. The delegates took a
second and stared at each other, and then back to the head delegate. The head delegate
was hesitant for a second. He then handed Cody the papers.
Signed : C. Hanks
The delegates immediately started installation of their equipment as they surround Cody
with more wires, more electrodes and more monitors. Cody lay still as they invaded the
room with hardware. The head delegate briefed Cody through the steps required for the
procedure, but all Cody could think of was his ability to be able to walk again. How he
could finally be free of oppression from his dreaded paralysis. How he could finally
conquer the fear of being unable to defend himself from the little stimuli that are
constantly around him.
After setting up the machine, they hooked it up to the life support machine that ensured
the survival of Cody.
This is going to hurt a bit. said the head delegate.

Cody laid still as the head delegate pierced an electrode through Codys stiff spine. Cody
could not feel the pain. The last time he did was when a mad mans bullet entered the
same spot. After inserting the electrode, the head delegate flicked a switch. Cody
immediately felt extreme pain in his spine. It felt as if the muscles that once held his
spine intact were starting to tear apart one by one. He shrieked in agony. Then it stopped.
Cody took a moment to digest what was happening. And then he finally understood. He
could feel pain!
The repercussions of the pain were accompanied by a smooth and fluid-like sensation
progressing from his top spine to nerve muscles all along his legs. He could feel particles
tingling all around his limbs. He could even picture the particles swimming through them,
as if they were fairies flying through towns, granting wishes along the way.
But then, the particles stopped spreading. Instead, he could feel the particles rushing back
up, as if they were an angry mob chasing something. The particles rushed back to his
spine at immense speed and a loud burst was heard, followed by red blood splattered all
over the room and onto the dark glasses the head delegate was wearing. With it came loud
blaring noises, beeps ringing from the life support machine.
The head delegate took down his glasses and wiped it gently. He looked at Codys fragile
body. There was nothing left of his lower body. His spine was nowhere to be seen.
The head delegates looked at the other delegates calmly as he muttered: Get out Cody

The Rationale
The motive of the creative response was to explore the theme in the movie The Matrix.
The theme discussed in the creative response was the negative impact and consequences
of technology on society. In the creative response, the setting of the story was used to
explore the theme. The technology of the story is based on the current scientific
breakthrough in spinal recovery, which convinces the audience of the authenticity of the
story. The creative response warns audience of the threat or negative trait in humans
continuing lust of scientific dominance in life through characterization. In the response,
the character Cody was explored and remains the main focus of the story which interprets
the negative consequence of scientific discovery strongly through the characters lust and
desire to regain an ability, ultimately resulting in the characters gruesome death,
reinforcing the idea of the terror of technological advancement in society.
The response also enforces the theme explored by translating the ending with the head
delegate mentioning to the other delegates to get another Cody ready, suggesting the
notion that as humans progress further and further into the territory of scientific
discoveries, the aspect of human empathy and ethics would be ignored. Suspense was
also used to further engage the readers into further analyzing if Cody was ever human.
Cody could be a human clone bred for the sole purpose of scientific discovery, which
raises further questions of ethics and disrupts the human moral value pyramid.
The use of imagery was also designed to aid readers in understanding the theme. In the
response, monitors, electrodes and wires not only help readers envision Codys
seemingly frail and limited bodily functions but also to help readers realize the horrible
truth. Could human advancement in science, first developed for the sole purpose of
serving the better good of humanity backfire and move humans further and further away
from the core values which defined scientific discovery. The use of images such as
monitors and hardware suggest to readers that scientific discovery may have been derived
humans from their human nature instead of sharpening and perfecting the human
experience.
In conclusion, my response aimed to promote the firm understanding of the atrocious
consequence which might await humanity. The style and elements of the creative
response were crucial in bringing the theme into the understanding of the readers and
helps open up a new dimension in understanding for the readers.
