POST WELD HEAT TREATMENT PROCDURE

(ELECTRIC RESISTANCE HEATING )

Procedure No: PS-HT-11A

Rev. : 3
Date : 13-08-2015

Scope:
All welded joints which are subjected to electric resistance heat treatment, shall be inspected and
heat treated in accordance to following procedure.
Procedure:
Electric resistance post weld heat treatment shall be carried out in accordance with the
requirements of applicable code and client specification.
Prior to the post weld heat treatment of new welded joint of nozzle or pressure vessel, the
following items shall be inspected and accepted by the designated Quality Control Inspector or
the third party inspector.
Only calibrated temperature recorders and thermocouples shall be used. Visual and dimensional
check will be in compliance to the latest revised drawing.

All welding completed and accepted.

All NDE coverage carried out.
Verification of the position of the welded joint within the soak band.
Verification of the positions of the temperature indicator/thermocouple on the welded
joint.
Verification of the calibration of the temperature recorder and thermocouple.

The operator shall be given a written document by the designated Quality Control inspector to
determine the heating, cooling rate and the holding temperature and time, to carry out induction
heat treatment.
Quality Control inspector, third party inspector and or authorized inspector shall have a free
access to witness the temperature recorder or recording chart during the process of heat
treatment.
The soak band shall contain the weld, heat affected zone and a portion of the base metal adjacent
to the weld being heat treated. The minimum width of this volume is the widest width of weld
plus 1t or 2in (50mm), which ever is less, where t is the nominal thickness of weld. The
portion of the vessel outside the soak band shall be protected so that the temperature gradient is
not harmful. This procedure may also be used to postweld heat treat portions of new vessels
after repairs.
During heat treatment, the surrounding atmosphere of the joint to be heat treated shall be
properly insulated to avoid the excessive oxidation of the surface of the joint.

Soak Band (SB): This is the region on the spherical or cylindrical shell that will be heated
uniformly to the required PWHT temperature. (See figure 1)

Heating Band (HB): This is the region encompasses the application of heat for PWHT and is
defined in length by equation (SB + 4 (R + t) ), where R is the radius of cylindrical or
spherical shell in inches (mm) and t is equal to the nominal thickness of the spherical or
cylindrical shell in inches (mm). (See figure 1)
Radiant Control Band: This is the region that encompasses the SB, HB and extends beyond the
edge of the HB. (See figure 1)
At least two numbers of thermocouples shall be attached to each weld joint to be heat treated in
order to ensure that the joints being heat treated is at the range specified from all the sides. One
thermocouple shall be attached at the inside surface of the joint if it permits.
The temperatures and rates of heating and cooling to be used in post weld heat treatment of
vessels constructed of materials for which post weld heat treatment may be required are given in
UCS-56 (ASME Sec. VIII Div. 1 Ed. 2013) and 6.4.4 of ASME Section VIII Division 2 Ed.
2013.
Before starting the heat treatment cycle, quality control inspector shall inspect the proper
placement of recorder, chart or graph paper & also notes the chart speed.
Upon completion of heat treatment cycle, the temperature recorder chart shall be handed over to
quality control inspector.
After completion of the partial heat treatment cycle of the weld joints, the joints should be
thoroughly checked for any distortion or damaged after heat treatment.
The final acceptance of the heat treatment of the components shall be documented with the
information stamped on recording chart and duly signed by the quality control inspector which
shall then be handed over o the Authorized Inspector for review.
