2015 Board of Directors/Others

Happy New Year to ALL.
Id like to welcome back old members and say
hello to the new members that have just
recently joined. Our club seems to be ever
evolving and growing with a more diversified
member base than ever! With this new
membership, I hope that we can offer even
more activities for our group that brings us
greater knowledge and more fun with our
horses. With your help and ideas we can make
that happen. See you at the next meeting, Jan
28th at Ricardos, so we can plan Another Year
of Possibilities.

Holly Richter Horsemanship Clinic

A diverse group of us rang in the New Year at a day long horsemanship
clinic conducted by club member Holly Richter. Attending were
dressage riders, trail riders, drivers and western pleasure show folks.
Even a Tombstone resident just picked to compete in the Extreme
Mustang Makeover Challenge! It seems fitting to include the Equine
New Years Resolutions hand-out that Holly provided at the opening of
the clinic. These Resolutions were the base from which each of the
eight horse and owner pairs launched their work with Holly. The
clinic was interactive, with auditors and owners adding in their own
experiences, their questions and their observations. There was also
plenty of applause for a job well done. The job well done always
involved a breakthrough in an owner's ability to better communicate to
their horse, a human task desired. I would like to extend a huge Thank
You to Holly for taking the day to share her horsemanship knowledge with us!

In 2016, I commit to my horses

TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY MY HORSES STATE OF MIND, THOUGHTS, AND EMOTIONS How
comfortable and/or successful they are in life, or not, directly reflects on my judgement and
understanding of them as individuals, and my ability to be a supportive leader for them. I will own that
responsibility, and learn.
TO CONSTANTLY CONSIDER WHAT MY HORSE IS THINKING and to try to direct those thoughts in
productive ways. This includes all the complexities of their world view as a prey animal with strong
herd instincts.
TO COMMUNICATE AND MAKE REQUESTS AT THEIR SPEED by honoring how fast my horses can
understand and learn new things, and to break my requests into pieces as small as they need to be for
them to be successful in everything they do, and to feel good.
TO SAY THANK YOU MORE OFTEN by recognizing and celebrating the smallest of their tries, and
to remember to pause, at just the right times, and thank them in ways meaningful to them. To elaborate
upon the celebration of donkey (or mule) tries, even more!
TO PRACTICE CONSISTENT LEADERSHIP for them by being aware of all the signals I am constantly
giving my horses about our relationship that affects their sense of well-being and security. Ill try to
remember that their perception of me as a valid leader, or not, directly affects their confidence, and
ability to focus.
TO IMPROVE MY TIMING AND FEEL of all my requests of my horse, so that they are as clear, but as
soft and respectful, as possible.
TO FOCUS ON THE THINGS THAT MATTER THE MOST: enhancing my horses relaxation, focus, and
balance. I will never sacrifice these most important things for outcomes like speed, or specific
performance goals. Ever.
Thanks to Harry Whitney for all that Ive learned through his horsemanship clinics that directly inspired
these New Years resolutions.!

Condolences to Terri Renwick for the loss of

two of her Barn companions, Jewel the barn
cat and dog Cricket.
We are sure they are frolicking away with
Jesse and all our other companions that have
crossed the Rainbow Bridge.
