novel of American author Sapphire.
its release, it was made into Precious:
"Push" by Sapphire, a film that won
and was produced by Oprah Winfrey
and Tyler Perry.
I was left back when I was twelve
because I had a baby for my fahver.
That was in 1983. I was out of school
for a year. This gonna be my second
baby. My daughter got Down Sinder.
She's retarded. I had got left back in
the second grade too, when I was
seven, 'cause I couldn't read (and I
still peed on myself). I should be in
the eleventh grade, getting ready to
go into the twelf' grade so I can gone
'n graduate. But I'm not. I'm in the

ninfe grade.
Syntax
I got suspended
from school 'cause I'm pregnant
which I don't think
is fair. I ain' did nothin'!
Imagery
My name is
Claireece Precious Jones. I don't know
why I'm telling
you that. Guess 'cause I don't know
Diction
how far I'm gonna
go with this story, or whether it's even
a story or why I'm
talkin'; whether I'm gonna start from
the beginning or right from here or two weeks from now. Two weeks from now? Sure you
can do anything when you talking or writing, it's not like living when you can only do what
you doing. Some people tell a story 'n it don't make no sense or be true. But I'm gonna try to
make sense and tell the truth, else what's the ---------- use? Ain' enough lies and --------out
there already?
Note about novel: Push is realistic fiction but not a biographical story. The author Sapphire encountered

TONE ANALYSIS- Directions: Read the following and apply to the next section of the assessment.
What is tone? The tone in a story can be joyful, serious, humorous, sad, threatening, formal, informal,
pessimistic, and optimistic. Your tone in writing will be reflective of your mood as you are writing. Tone in
writing is not really any different than the tone of your voice. You know that sometimes it is not what
you say, but how you say it. It is the same with writing. Every adjective and adverb you use, your
sentence structure, and the imagery you use will show your tone. The definition of tone is the way the
author expresses his attitude through his writing. The tone can change very quickly, or may remain the
same throughout the story. Tone is expressed by your use of syntax, your point of view, your diction, and
the level of formality in your writing.
Examples of tone in a story include just about any adjective you can imagine: scared, anxious, excited,
worried, foolish, smart, and/or depressing http://examples.yourdictionary.com/examples-of-tone-in-astory.html
8. An example of a casual tone is:
A. The way I look at it, someone needs to start doing something about disease. Whats the big deal?
People are dying. But the average person doesnt think twice about it until it affects them. Or
someone they know.
B. There was a delay in the start of the project, attributable to circumstances beyond the control of
all relevant parties. Progress came to a standstill, and no one was prepared to undertake the
assessment of the problem and determination of the solution.
9. Which word best describes the tone of the second novel, Push?
A. optimistic (looking at the bright side)
B. vulnerable (exposed)
C. sarcastic (verbal irony)
D. sad (depressed)

II. TONE ANALYSIS PPE PARAGRAPH: Directions: Look again at either the excerpt from
Awakening or the excerpt from Push and applying what you see above in the TONE reminder section,
answer the following. Use your own paper for this portion.
Tone Analysis: Think about a text you receive from a friend about an important subject. How important
are the words he/she chooses and the order in which they use these words? For example if your friends
message is: Hey, I need to see you. What would you think? What is the tone of their message? What
words did they use? In what order are the words used?
Now, what if their message was: Better see you. What are you thinking now? Some of the same words
are still used, a few deleted, and a few added..how does it change the meaning or tone of the text? Is it
more threatening? Why? After considering this think about the two pieces you have read for this
assessment. How did the word choice affect the meaning? How about the words deleted? Added? The
syntax? How does it affect the meaning/tone of the excerpt?

A. What is the tone of the excerpt from this novel?

the subject, or the theme in the novel. Be sure to state specifically which character,
