Transcendentalism Web Quest

Think about the quotation listed above while you answer the following
questions in this webquest.
Step one: Gain a basic understanding of Transcendentalism
1. What authors are associated with this movement? Ralph Waldo Emerson and
Henry David Thoreau
2. What century did this movement take place in? Nineteenth Century

3. The Transcendentalists stood at the heart of The American Renaissance-the flowering of our nation's thought in literature, poetry, painting,
sculpture, architecture , and music in the period roughly designated from
1835-1880.
4. What area of the U.S. did this movement begin in? eastern Massachusetts
5. Emerson attempted to define the philosophy in simple terms as "What is
popularly called Transcendentalism among us, is Idealism; Idealism as it
appears in 1842." But it is much larger and more complex than that. How
is it described further along in this paragraph?
6. What was the Transcendentalist club? Was a protest against the arid
intellectual climate of Harvard and Cambridge.

7. How/why/where did it develop? It was develop by George Ripley, George


Putnam and Emerson, they met in Willards Hotel in Cambridge they plan a
symposium of periodic gathering of people who found the present state of

America very unsatisfactory. It was protest against the close minded views
of Harvard and Cambridge on behalf of deeper and broader views.
8. How difficult was it to become a member of this club? It was not difficult
to join because it wasnt officially a club in order to join, you can just join
and said your ideas.

9. Who called the first-ever meeting of this club? Frederic Henry, Ralph
Waldo Emerson, George Ripley and George Putnam.

10. Ralph Waldo Emerson: He was the author of the book Nature in Published
in 1836. He study intense philosophy and religion. He study at Harvard
over years and published many Books and stories about his views of the
American transcendental movement, He became very famous.

11.Henry David Thoreau: He went to Harvard, and it was inspired by Ralph Waldo
Emerson book of nature he would always explore his ideas and believed in
the movement of transcendentalism. He died at age of 44 but after that he
wrote and numerous essays and works that continue legacy.
