Second Reading
1 Corinthians 12: 12-30
http://www.usccb.org/bible/1corinthians/12:12
Brothers and sisters:
As a body is one though it has many parts,
and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body,
so also Christ.
For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body,
whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons,
and we were all given to drink of one Spirit.
Now the body is not a single part, but many.
If a foot should say,
Because I am not a hand I do not belong to the body,
it does not for this reason belong any less to the body.
Or if an ear should say,
Because I am not an eye I do not belong to the body,
it does not for this reason belong any less to the body.
If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be?
If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of
smell be?
But as it is, God placed the parts,
each one of them, in the body as he intended.

If they were all one part, where would the body be?
But as it is, there are many parts, yet one body.
The eye cannot say to the hand, I do not need you,
nor again the head to the feet, I do not need you.
Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker
are all the more necessary,
and those parts of the body that we consider less honorable
we surround with greater honor,
and our less presentable parts are treated with greater
propriety,
whereas our more presentable parts do not need this.
But God has so constructed the body
as to give greater honor to a part that is without it,
so that there may be no division in the body,
but that the parts may have the same concern for one
another.
If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it;
if one part is honored, all the parts share its joy.
Now you are Christs body, and individually parts of it.
Some people God has designated in the church
to be, first, apostles; second, prophets; third, teachers;
then, mighty deeds;
then gifts of healing, assistance, administration,
and varieties of tongues.
Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers?
Do all work mighty deeds? Do all have gifts of healing?
Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?

Reflect
1. Read this scripture once. While reading, look out for a word or
phrase that sticks out to you.
2. Read the scripture one more time. This time, try to have
another person read while you close your eyes to listen.
3. What word or phrase stuck out to you?
4. What could God be trying to teach you by having that word or
phrase stick out to you?
5. Think: What are some ways that the decisions of one person
can hurt another. What are some ways that our decisions can
help someone else?

BATTLEFIELD OF FAITH
Majority of concepts are from Truth Be Told; Basics in Catholic
Apologetics, by Mark Hart and Joe Cady
Question: What does it mean to say that humans were made in the
image and likeness of God?-Pg. 32-34
In scripture (Genesis 1:27), we find that among all of Gods creatures
it is only human beings that are said to be made in His image and
likeness. In other words, humans are different from other living
beings because our nature more closely resembles Gods.
One of the ways that humans are in the image and likeness of God is
in the way that we are granted authority (or dominion) over
everything else that He created. When we responsibly care for the rest
of creation as its stewards, we are imitating Gods nature.
In addition, humans are different from the rest of creation because of
two things; free will and intellect. Free will is the ability to make our
own choices and possibly go against Gods will. Intellect allows us to
think about the possible outcomes of various choices in order to decide
how to act. These two qualities in humans allow us to share in Gods
own freedom and His own wisdom.

FAMILY MASS
January 24, 2016
CATHOLIC FAMILY CHALLENGE
Gather together to share a meal as a family; it can be breakfast, lunch,
or dinner. Note: family can be more than just parents and their
children, it can also be friends or extended-relatives.
After finishing the meal begin going around the meal table for
individual sharing. Every single person must share two things; 1) how
important a member of the family is to them, and 2) how different your
life would be without them. Additionally, the person sharing must look
at every family member and share these two things about them.
When everyone at the table has finished sharing, end your meal with
the leader praying for thanksgiving to God. Remember to thank God in
your prayer for the gift of life and the ability to share that life with
those sitting at table with you.

Also, humans share in the image and likeness of God due to our
being meant for a communion (coming together) of love. God,
Himself, is a life-giving communion between the Father and Son,
which gave life to the Holy Spirit. Similarly, humans are made for lifegiving communion between man and woman, which creates a third
human being (a child). Though animals also have genders, they do not
possess the ability to love and sacrifice for one another like humans
do.
Lastly, we more closely resemble Gods nature because of our soul.
God is immortal, and so is the human soul. God lives forever, and our
soul is the spiritual part of us that also lives forever.

Now the body is not a single part,

but many.
