Go to http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/legacy/collision-lab. Stay on the introduction tab.
In this lab we will analyze what happens when two objects collide. We will analyze the motion of
two objects before the collision and two objects after the collision. We will then look for any
patterns that we may find.
First make sure that you click on more data below the graph and then make sure that the
collision is completely 100% elastic. Use the data below to fill in the table and run the
simulations.

What do you notice about the total kinetic energy before the collision compared to the total
kinetic energy after the collision?
How are perfectly elastic collisions different from perfectly inelastic collisions?
8. This time change the elasticity to 60%. This means the collision is partially elastic and partial
inelastic. Record your values in the table below.

How does the total energy of the system before compare to the total energy of the system after?
They gain energy
10. There is a law in physics called the Law of Conservation of Momentum. Look this law up in
your physics book. Write the law below and determine if the data in this experiment helps
support this law or not.
total momentum does not change, yes it does
11. Describe the differences between perfectly elastic, perfectly inelastic, and partially elastic
collisions in terms of energy. perfect elastic has higher number, inelastic has lower
