Usetwoballoonstorepresentthehumanlungs.Wewillusea
thirdballoontorepresentthediaphragm.Weareusingawhistletorepresentthevocal
chordsasoursecondfunction.Thebottlerepresentsthehumanbody.Thetubing
representsthetrachea.

Whenyoublowintothestrawtheballoonswillshowhowyouinhaleandexhale.
(Theywillexpandandcontract.)Itwillalsoshowhowthediaphragmworksandhowit
helpsyoubreatheintherespiratorysystem.Whenyouexhalethediaphragmwill
expandtomakeroomforthelungs,andwhenyouinhalethediaphragmwillcontract.

Constructionplanhowwewillbuildit:
Wewilluseawaterbottle,astraw,and3
balloonstorepresentthelungsandthediaphragm.(Andhowtheyworktogether.)

1. Gathertogethermaterialslisted.Wewillusescissors,3largeballoons,2rubber
bands,electricaltape,aplastic2literbottle,flexibleplastictubing,anda
Yshapedhoseconnector.

2. Fittheplastictubingintooneoftheopeningsofthehoseconnector.Usethetape
tomakeanairtightsealaroundtheareawherethetubingandthehose
connectormeet.
3. Placeaballoonaroundeachoftheremaining2openingsofthehoseconnector.
Tightlywraptherubberbandsaroundtheballoonswheretheballoonsandhose
4. Measuretwoinchesfromthebottomofthe2literbottleandcutthebottomoff.
5. Placetheballoonsandhoseconnectorstructureinsidethebottle,threadingthe
plastictubingthroughtheneckofthebottle.
6. Usethetapetosealtheopeningwheretheplastictubinggoesthroughthe
narrowopeningofthebottleattheneck.Thesealshouldbeairtight.
7. Tieaknotattheendoftheremainingballoonandcutthelargepartofthe
ballooninhalfhorizontally.
8. Usingtheballoonhalfwiththeknot,stretchtheopenendoverthebottomofthe
bottle.
9. Gentlypulldownontheballoonfromtheknot.Thisshouldcauseairtoflowinto
theballoonswithinyourlungmodel.
10. Releasetheballoonwiththeknotandwatchastheairisexpelled.
