Its frustrating to get a mark and not know why you got it. The lower the mark, the less likely the
student is to know what that means. There is a group that does not need this and it is the group
that get 85% and above.
Outcome student needs to know, understand and do
Indicator student produces some kind of representation of their understanding.
Distinguishing between assessment and evaluation:
Assessment is the act of gathering information on an ongoing basis in order to understand
individual students learning and needs.
It is gathering information, opportunity to give feedback (not necessarily giving marks).
Students are more willing to take chances because they know that they arent going to be
judged
Evaluation is the culminating act of interpreting the information gathered through relevant and
appropriate assessments for the purpose of making decisions or judgements, often at reporting
time.
Assessment Of, As, For Learning
Of: evaluation (you are done learning)
As: students assess themselves, (can be feedback if you do it yourself)
For: in progress (think to move forward)
Research says that 10% - 40% of assessment should be of learning (evaluated with a mark)
What students want in assessment
Fair given what was taught
Fair grade given effort and understanding
Feedback and comments make sense
SMART Goals are
Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Realistic
