Text from the poem to support - copy

the lines

How did this piece of information enhance my understanding

of the poem?

Beowulf, Youve come to us in

friendship, and Because of the reception
your father found at our court.- Lines
190-192
A powerful monster; living down in the
darkness.- Lines 1-2
He was spawned in that slime,
conceived by a pair of those monsters
born of Cain, murderous creatures
banished By God, punished forever for
the crime Of Abels Death.- Lines 1923
In Herot, When the night hid him He
never Dared to touch King Hrothgars
glorious Throne, protected by God-God,
Whose love Grendel could not Know.Lines 82-85
The sharpest and hardest iron could not
scratch at his skin, for that sin-stained
demon Had bewitched all mens
weapons.- Lines 482-484
So Hrothgars men lived happy in his
hall.- Line 15

It made me realize that understanding of text would be hard

because it wasnt modern English. Therefore, I had to carefully
examine every line to comprehend it. This gave me a better
understanding of Anglo-Saxon writing.
This piece made me realize; the main antagonist of Beowulf.
Furthermore, gives background to the first villain Beowulf will
face. Also alludes to Grendel not being human, but a monster
that must be dealt with.

Have the brave Geats build me a

tomb.- Lines 809-810
The monsters Thoughts were as quick
as his greed or his claws: He slipped
through the door and there in the silence
Snatched up thirty men, smashed them.Lines 34-37

The piece of information helps me understand Grendel not

attacking King Hrothgar. It also shows me that God plays an
important part in this story.

I got a better understanding of Grendels true power. In

addition, learned that Grendel can bewitch weapons. Thus
showing, the reason Beowulf fought Grendel with his hands.
The piece of information found lets me know; that this story
happened a long time ago. Also lets me know that before
Grendel; there was peace, for Hrothgars people. In a way gave
an allusion, to a calm before the storm. Showing that Grendel
ruined peace like a storm ruins the day.
Helps to establish that many heroes die in this poem, even if
they are the main protagonist. Also shows danger monsters
pose to everyone in story. For, they are able to kill many
warriors before Beowulf gets them.

Ship

In 1939, a ship containing buried

treasures was found in Sutton Hoo. This
could match one used by Beowulf based
on Items found inside.

And your Ship will sail home with its

treasure- holds full.- Lines 391
So Beowulf Chose the mightiest men he
could find, The bravest and best of the
Geats, fourteen in all, and led them down
their boat.- Lines 119-121

This piece made me realize that parts of the story are true. As
well as show that Beowulf obtained many treasures. Finally
shows that Beowulf accomplished many things in his life.
Thus, enhancing my understanding, on him being seen as a
great hero.
