APPENDIX E
PROBLEM STATEMENT
Flexural Analysis-Service Load
Problems in this group assume that concepts in Chapters 1, 2, and 5 dealing with
materials and flexural analysis have been covered. Loss or prestress is given as
part of problem statement (Problems 1-5) where required.
Problem 12)
Given Cross section A shown in Fig, E-1. Normal weight concrete 150
Tb/tt (23.6 KN/m?), thus w, =200'Ib/ft (2.92 KN/m). Allowable
stresses: compression 3000 psi (20.7 N/mm), tension, zero,
Find ‘What F, (initial prestress force) and e would correspond to the full
use of the allowable concrete stresses given? Show your check of
top and bottom fiber stresses at support and at midspan sections.
Indicate which section governs limiting F, and e.
Problem 1(b)
Given: Same information as Prob. 1(a), except allow 300 psi (2.07
N/mm?) tension in concrete (instead of zero) (Fig. E-1).
Find: Same as Prob. I(a). Compare results if you have solved Fy and €
‘with and without allowing tension.

Problem 1(c)
Given:
Beam shown in Fig. E-l has F=241 k (1072 kN) (prestress at
transfer) and e=5.56 in. (141 mm). We are willing to allow 3000
psi (20.7 N/mm?) compression and 490 psi 3.38 N/mm?) tension
in the concrete. After losses occur, assume F=0.80F, for this
beam.
Find: ‘Are the stresses in excess of the given allowable values at transfer?
‘What superimposed load, »,, in addition to the beam weight, w,,
‘would be allowed based on these stresses?
Problem 2(2) .
Given: Cross section B (Fig. E-2) with same area and w, as section A of
Problem 1. Allowable stresses: compression, 3000 psi (20.7
N/mm); tension, zero.
Find: What F, (initial prestress force) and e would fully utilize the
allowable stresses given? Show center of top and bottom fiber
stresses and indicate which section, support or midspan, governs
the limiting F, and e.
Problem 2(b)
Given: Same information (Fig. E-2) as Problem 2(a), except allow 300 psi
2.07 N/mm) tension in concrete.
Find: Same as Problem 1(a). Compare results if you solved Fy and €
with and without allowing tension.
Problem 2(6)
Given: Beam shown in Fig. E-2. F, =241 k (1072 KN) and ¢=8.65 in. (220
‘mm). Allowable stresses: 3000 psi (20.7 N/mm*) compression and
