How to Grow Through God's Word

Horton Road Church of Christ

April 11, 2010

Introductory vignettes
• Facebook comment: What if we treated our bibles like our cellphones?
• Jesus spoke of the pearl of great price--what if we viewed God's word as that
pearl?
• In my experience, sadly, I have more often read the bible just to read it than
to commune with God.

The bible teaches us how to follow God. By reading it, meditating on it, and obeying
it, we draw closer to God.

1. We must see God's word as something valuable (2 Timothy 3:14-17).

• Through God's word, we are confirmed in what we already know about faith
(14).
• God's word guides us forward and makes us wise for salvation, combined with
faith (15).
• God's word is trustworthy to teach, rebuke, correct, and train us (16).

2. We must humbly seek God through his word (Psalm 119:97-104).

• We gain wisdom and love for God through his word (97-99).
• We draw closer to God through his word (102).
• God's word teaches us the sweetness of God's ways and the right way to live
(103-104).

3. We must be moved to action through God's word.

• If we read God's word properly, we will obey it (Psalm 119:100-102).
• God's word equips us for every good work (2 Timothy 3:17).

4. Start small.
• Pick a book of the bible to read --> Read 1 chapter each day --> Pray for
wisdom and insight into God's word --> Meditate on what you read and learned
throughout the day --> Obey God's word by doing what you learned!
