Inthispoem,Lochheadasksustoconsiderthewaytheelderlyaretreatedinour
societyandhowtheprocessofagingchangesourperceptionsofindividuals.
Thepoetusesthesymbolofhergrandmothershandstoemphasiseherchangingroles
overthecourseofherlife,fromyoungfishergirltotheagedandinfirmoldladythat
shehasbecome.

samehandsaretransportedbacktoherpast.Weseethemsureandskilfulwhen

Thisjumpbetweenthepresentandthepasttooisarepeatedfeatureofthepoem.It
helpstoshowthedirectrelationshipbetweentheelderly,infirmgrandmotheroftoday
