Styles

Codes and conventions

Codes: equipment used cameras, also symbolic codes for
example what the person is feeling and how we see that
Convention: the way things are done within the video this
also describes the genre of the music video
The conventions of a music video vary depending on genre
of music. However, some general conventions are: the
artist is shown performing, the lyrics of the song influence
what is shown in the video, the pace of editing fits the pace
of the music, and the codes of dress reflect the mood of the
song.

Narrative
A narrative music video follows a story
line. There are two different types:
Linear and Fragmented. A linear
narrative starts a story at the beginning,
goes on through to the middle and then
finishes at the end. This can make
narratives seem like a Mini film.
Fragmented narratives, on the other
hand, show a sequence of events but
present them in a non linear fashion, i.e.
it does not take place in an order. An
example of a linear narrative is Katy
Perry- Thinking of you as it plays a story
from the beginning to the end.

As Live
This style of music video
captures the experience of
seeing the artist performing live.
They can be either staged
performances produced in a
studio, or can be actually live
footage captured during real
performance. This creates a
realistic feel and gives the
viewer an experience unlike the
other forms of music videos. It is
often used to show the emotion,
and attitude of the artist as they
perform the song to give the
viewer a better feel for the
music. It is also used as a
marketing tool to promote
concerts and tour dates. For

Pastiche
Pastiche is when an imitation is created
of an artist or a specific time period, this
is done through taking the styles and
trends in that time period and reenforcing them within the artists own
video. An example of this is as you are
able to see above Christiana Aguilera's
"Candy Man", this is this style of music
video this being that the setting is
incorporated in that 1940's era. In
addition to Christina displaying the hair
styles of that era curly and tends to
swept to the side and she uses different
colors to elaborate on that era.
Christiana taste for that era is high
amount as some of her music videos
give to this tribute to this era once
again, her music video is successful in
creating this tribute as the elements of
the setting and customs are achieved
and presented well to the audience

Homage

Homage is a show or
demonstration of respect or
dedication to someone or
something. An example of
this style could be Luther
Vandross's video Dance with
my Father again.

Reference
Reference music videos are
types of videos which have a
link to something else. For
example, referencing a film in
a music video. A strong
example which represents this
style is Adeles song Skyfall.
This is because it references
the James Bond film in the
video.

Interpretative
An interpretative
music video is one
where the directors
interpret the lyrics of
a song using them to
perform a narrator
function making the
videos often quite
literal. An example of
an interpretative
music video is
Trapped in the
Closet by R Kelly.

Parody
Parodies are usually fan made,
comedic versions of well known
music videos. They can come in
any form (animation, live etc)
they take the form of the
original video that they are
copying. Parodies also change
the lyrics of the original song,
but keeps the rhythm of the
song so that they sound very
similar.
An example of a parody is a
remake of Justin Biebers song
Sorry.

Animation
Animation based music
videos are simply partially
or entirely animated music
videos. This style of video
is usually cheaper to
produce since its entirely
digital, and props, venues,
cameras and other
equipment aren't needed.
An example of an
animated music video is
Rude Boy by the artist
Rhianna.

Surrealism
These music videos are
very abstract, and may or
may not have a relation to
the music itself, these
videos are very artistic
and creative and usually
contain a mixture of live
footage and animation to
add surreal effects or
distortion. They appear to
be influence by visions or
dreams. For example,
Rhianna's song
Disturbia.

Influence of commercial
The style or narrative of
some music videos are
influenced by the world of
advertising and
commercialism. Some
music videos can also be
seen as advertisements for
a specific way of life.
An example of this style of
music video is the song
Glamorous by Fergie. It
promotes the glamorous
lifestyle that comes with a
lot of money.
