January 2015
President's Note - Tia Merwin

2015 Holiday Charity:Hope Ranch Ministries

Happy New Year!

I hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday season and are
looking forward to the new year.
I love the Holiday season and all the fun events around town. I'm very
lucky to have most of my family nearby and we got to spend lots of time
together the past couple of months. Malachi finally warmed up to Santa
and even had a picture with him at a holiday party this year.
We are looking forward to 2016 and all the fun MOMS Club events this
year will bring!
This month we have a couple of Mommy and Me lunch dates, a craft
morning at Old School, swimming at Splash!, gymnastic time and more.
We hope you can join us at some or all of the events in January.

On December 21st, I delivered over 12 LARGE bags/boxes of clothes,

jewelry, toiletries, books etc. It was amazing! Diana Janz, the Director of
Hope Ranch, was very excited and grateful to receive it all. She said that
she'd pull some items out to give them for Christmas, then she let them
dig through the rest of the items that night to divvy up. Thank you ladies
for contributing to such a great cause!

Recipe: Whole Wheat Banana Pancakes

Craft of the Month:

Birdseed Ornaments

(/uploads/1/2/4/6/12464424/872081_orig.jpg)

This simple craft is something fun you can do together with your kids,
then hang outside on a tree and watch the birds enjoy! There are 4
different ways to make them, depending on which ingredients you'd like
to use: peanut butter, corn syrup, geletin, or coconut oil.
ou can find instructions for the different ways here:
Y
http://www.wikihow.com/MakeBirdSeedOrnaments
(http://www.wikihow.com/MakeBirdSeedOrnaments)However, the
way we made them was by melting cocount oil and mixing with chopped
nuts and bird seed. We poured the mixture into cookie cutters set onto
foil. Using a straw, create a hole in your mold where you can thread a
string to hang it on a tree. Let it solidify to room temperature and then
put in the freezer for an hour before carefully pushing it out of the
cookie cutter. Then hang them outside for your feathered friends! This
method is great for Winter.

Member Social

the name of the meeting to a social to better describe the event.
Please join us at our next member social on Thursday,January 14that
10am at Wesley United Methodist Church.

100% pure maple syrup for serving

INSTRUCTIONS
1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking
soda, and salt.
2. Make a well (hole) in the center of the flour mixture and pour in
the honey, eggs, milk, and 2 tablespoons of melted butter. Whisk
together thoroughly, but do not overmix.
3. Gently fold the mashed bananas into the batter with a spatula.

Club Highlights from December

Here are some highlights from December. We had a great turnout for our
December Member Social. The crafts included wishing wands, cards to
nursing home residents or family members, and Santa beards. We had
even more craft fun at the Springfield Library making holiday ornaments.

4. Heat a griddle or saut pan over mediumhigh heat. Swirl enough

butter around the pan until it is well coated. Add pancake batter
using a soup ladle.
5. When the pancakes have begun brown on the bottom, flip them
over to cook the other side.
6. Serve with warm maple syrup and a side of fruit. And don't forget
to freeze the leftovers for another day!

Our January Moment on a Mom Spotlight is Lara Wheeler. Lara has been

in MOMS Club sinceFebruary 2015 and has one son, Maxton. Lara grew
up in Elkhart, Indiana. Her and her family moved to Eugene in January
2015 for her husband's new job. Lara's favorite things aboutEugene are
the nice parks and all the activities for younger kids to participate in
around town.

(/uploads/1/2/4/6/12464424/945774_orig.jpg)

Before becoming a mom, Lara worked in the nonprofit sector, mainly

marketing anddevelopment. Most recently, she worked in executive
leadership with the Boys & Girls Cluborganization. She still occasionally

writes grants and consults from home. Lara likes arts andcrafts of all
kinds. She also enjoys entertaining and small group fellowship.

Helping Hands Program

Part of the support we have in MOMS Club of Eugene is helping each
other during times of family additions, upheaval, andstress. This is not
just limited to having a baby, things like moving or illness in the family
also warrant a need for this program. Our Helping Hands program
provides moms with assistance, usually givingseveral meals in a time of
need. However, this program can provide more than just meals. We
can arrange assistance with childcare, running errands, even a phone
tree! We want all of our members tobenefit from this program in a time
of need and we are more than willing to customize an
assistanceschedule that works well for each situation. Please let us know
if a circumstance should arise in your life and you feel this program
would help you! Contact Carole Sterry (mailto:csterry@comcast.net) for
more information on this program.

Lara's favorite things to do when she gets some "Mommy Time" is to go

to Target alone! The TVshow she's addicted to right now is Game of
Thrones. Her favorite movie is SHAG, a movieabout 1950s beach
dancing. Lara's favorite book is The Giver which she read in 5th grade
andthen remained her favorite. If she could go anywhere in the world it
would be Australia so shecould hold a koala. It's on her life todo list!
Lara's favorite thing about being a mom is seeing Maxton's personality
start to form and show. She also loves the running hugs! Her favorite
thing about MOMS Club is the opportunity forMaxton to socialize and
the adult conversations for herself.

New Baby Corner

No new babies in December.

We'd like to welcome all new babies in the newsletter, so let any board
member know the details and we'll include it here! And please let us
know if we missed you, because we'd be happy to add your new little one
in next months newsletter.

Playgroup Corner
Playgroups are a great way to connect with Moms of kids with similar
ages. Starting September 2015, we are asking that all regular birthyear
playgroups meet on Tuesday or Wednesday, so they don't conflict with
the allages playgroups.

Are we missing something?

Is there something you'd like to see us include in future newsletters?
Have an idea for an article, a recipe to share, photos from a MOMS Club
event you'd like included? We're always open to hearing from you! Feel
free to email Emily (mailto:emilylooney@gmail.com) directly with ideas.
