Redevelopment of Mangalore Junction Railway Station, Mangalore
Introduction: Train travel is the most commonly used means of long distance transport in
India. People from different strata of society travel in trains. But as the city is growing, this
small scale railway terminal has been of great inconvenience in terms of infrastructure as well
as its failure to make a lasting first impression. For transport hubs, passenger satisfaction is
the foremost preference in terms of infrastructure and comfort either departure or arrival.
The Mangalore Junction Railway Station has trains connecting to more cities as compared to
Mangalore Central Railway Station. And since the Mangalore Central Railway Station has no
possibility of an extension, the station will soon lose its purpose as Mangalore is getting more
populated every year and train travel being a necessity. Mangalore Junction will soon be the
main station as there is space for expansion there.

Aim: The aim of the project is to provide architectural solutions by developing the existing
terminal with consideration of the current scenario as well as foreseeing the future growth of
Mangalore and to build a new terminal which provides access and security for the passengers
who need to get to the second and third platform without any hassle. All in all giving the
passengers a very captivating welcome to the city of Mangalore by designing a railway
terminal which fulfils international standards.

Objectives:

To widen and organise the platforms in such a manner to avoid overcrowding at peak
hours.
To provide separate entry and exit so that the passenger movement is one way.
To connect another connecting terminal at the 3rd platform for faster access to the
terminal.
To make the structure entirely barrier free.
To make an architectural statement in the building so as to treat as though its a
gateway to the city.
To improve the existing parking by providing more space to park their vehicles and
better movement of vehicles to avoid confusion.
To ease the access from the main road to the station.
To develop more pedestrian friendly connections between various related nodes.

Methodology:

Study of Mangalore and its population, determining the percentage of floating

population, people who travel in trains on what time basis, the busiest time of the day
and their destination and from where they arrive. To identify the various issues
interrelated with the railway station, its scale, nature, intensity of usage and the
relationship with the users behavioural characteristics in India, thus forming solutions
to the same.

Literature studies on the standard Indian railway station and the standard international
station. Provide a comparison so its possible to design an international standard
railway stations which fulfil all the requirements of an Indian terminal and more.
Case study of Turbhe railway station located at the suburbs of Mumbai and Madurai
junction ,to get a clear understanding of what a railway station should be according to
Indian standards.
An internet case study on Santiago Callatravas Liege Guillemins Railway Station,
Belgium to give an idea of a station that fulfils international standards.
To articulate a design based on all the data and information congregated over the due
course of time.

Feasibility:
The Southern Railways Palakkad Division has proposed plans worth crores at the Mangalore
Central Railway Station. One of the proposed works include the second entry to the station.
Their goal is to make a world class railway station which will be the prime element of the
city.
There is need for a bigger and more functional railway station because with a city that grows
as fast as Mangalore, there has to be flexibility in the facilities provided. And with this in
mind we have to cater to the needs of the passengers as well.

Scope and limitations:

The scope of this thesis is only to demonstrate the passenger facilities of the station building
and the circulation associated with it. Only the passenger requirements such as waiting
rooms, refreshment rooms, tea stalls, enquiry office, reservation office, station buildings,
Station Master's office and other offices, bath rooms and toilets, drinking water supply
arrangements, platforms and platform sheds and approach roads will be dealt with as well as
the access from various roads around the station will be changed to convenience. In doing so
the staff requirements such as rest houses, running rooms for guards and drivers and staff
canteens would be considered too.
The traffic requirements such as goods sheds and goods platforms, signals and signal cabins,
reception and departure lines and sidings, brake down trains and arrangements for the same
and station equipment and loco, carriage and wagon requirements such as loco shed, watering
or fuelling facilities, inspection pits and staff requirements will not be dealt with in this
project.
