INVITATION

12 International Symposium on the

Contributions of Psychology to Peace Research
University of Cyprus, Nicosia,
June 6-11, 2011
th

Theme: Divided Societies

You are cordially invited to participate in the 12th Symposium on the Contributions of
Psychology to Peace Research that will take place between June 6 and 11 2011 in
Nicosia, Cyprus. Your name is included in an invitation list of around 50 participants
proposed by the International Committee for the Psychological Study of Peace and the
local committee.
International Symposia on the Contributions of Psychology to Peace bring together invited
participants from around the world every other year. The twelfth biennial meeting will be
held in Nicosia, Cyprus and as the symposium theme emphasizes the challenges faced
by divided societies, participants are invited to address this theme as it relates to a wide
range of topics that bear on the psychology of peace, including particular areas of interest
and expertise.
The symposia enable scholars to present their current research in peace psychology.
Additionally they provide a platform for mutual exchange of ideas and experiences where
participants engage in intercultural dialogue aimed at reducing cultural bias and
ethnocentrism in research and practice in peace psychology. The goal is to bring forward
voices from cultures and situations that are typically not included in peace discourses and
to build an international community that promotes peace-related research and action.
We are very excited to plan a week full of presentations, exchanges, dialogues, cultural
forums and recreational interludes. We hope you will join us. In the event that you know
you will be unable to attend, notification of this to my email below would be greatly
appreciated so that we may offer your spot to another colleague.
Hoping to see you in Cyprus this coming June,
With best wishes,

Stelios N. Georgiou, Local Site Coordinator,

Professor of Educational Psychology,
University of Cyprus

LOCATION, FACILITIES AND COST
The symposium, including key note addresses and paper presentations, will be held at the
main campus of the University of Cyprus in Nicosia, but some activities will take place in
Larnaka (about 30 minutes drive). Accommodation will also be in a pleasant area by the
Larnaka beach front. In June, the climate in the Mediterranean area is typically warm
(between 30-35 degrees Celsius) and comfortable. During the day you may be able to
swim and sun bath, even though in the evening you may need a light jacket.
ACCOMMODATION
Participants may prioritize their resources depending on personal criteria. Therefore,
instead of charging everybody the same amount for accommodation, the Local committee
has decided to offer a variety of choices in hotels (from 2 to 4 stars), all of which are in
walking distance from each other. Reservations can be made directly with the hotels.
More information will be sent later to those who will express an initial interest in attending
the symposium.
Registration fee
Arrangements have been made for a conference package including all meals, traveling on
the island, cultural excursions and conference activities (but excluding accommodation).
The conference registration fee is 170 euro.
Payment
Participants can pay either by VISA or MASTERCARD (see attached Form).
Letter of invitation
If you need a formal letter of invitation, please send a request to:
Panayiotis Stavrinides (stavrini@ucy.ac.cy).
Travel arrangements
Cyprus is really beautiful in June! In addition to your participation to the symposia and
your involvement in a variety of gratifying professional activities, you may choose to take
advantage of your presence in this crossroad between three Continents (Europe, Asia and
Africa) and plan your time accordingly. There are plenty of opportunities on the island for
sight seeing, leisure and recreation.
Come to Larnaka International Airport. Take a taxi or shuttle to your hotel. Directions will
be given later.
Funding possibilities
The symposium organizers are keenly aware of the financial limitations of some of our
outstanding scholars around the world, which does not make it always possible for them to
participate. The symposium organizers are working hard on raising money for this event
and hopefully we are able to completely or partly support about five participants to attend

the symposium. If you need financial support, please send an application with details
concerning your situation (employment or study situation, travel costs and other relevant
information) to the Local Site Coordinator.
Expressing an interest - Deadline
Those who will express an interest to participate by December 31, 2010 (no obligation)
will receive further information. Please do so by sending an e-message to the Site
Coordinator or the Symposium Secretary. Advanced notice of the number of possible
participants will help us organize the Symposium better.
Registration Deadline
To guarantee a place in the Symposium, the non-refundable Registration fee should be
paid by January 31, 2011.
