COMPARATIVE

STUDY

My comparative study focuses on two different artists. I will be comparing and contrasting themes,
meanings, and techniques found in their work. The two artists I will be using in my comparative
study are international artist ,Charles Camoin, and local artist charles dwyer. Charles Camoin was
associated with fauvism art, which i have taken inspiration from in my own work. Charles Dwyer is
an expressionist artist who has created meaningful works of fine art.

Charles Camion was Part the original group of artists that were the
First to be labeled as the Fauves. Charles Camions paintings were
identified by seemingly wild brush strokes, and bright saturated
colors, these techniques suggest that the subject will be portrayed
as visually eye catching and attention grabbing in a elegant yet
dramatic manner, containing A high degree of abstraction and
simplification. This is important because it helps identify Camoins
work from other fauvist artist, it makes him unique and creates a
sense of familiarity As you can see the painting on the right
showcases the wild brush work and the vibrant saturated color that
is associated with the fauvist movement.

Charles Camoins paintings usually consisted of

landscapes but he also painted the female form

painting

In the first visual of the nude painting he uses a lot of wild and
untamed brushstrokes that seem to blend in with each other
seamlessly yet each color is distinct, therefore negating any use of
negative space. the subject of the nude painting is undetailed yet
easy to discern as a figure which has been silhouetted by the harsh
saturated messy background of colors that appear textured like
drapery. This contrast the technique used in the sailboat in port
cassis which consist of sharp yet evasive lines and bright yet
minimal patches of saturated colour and also a minimal color palette
compared to the nude painting which uses a variety of unmixed
paint. color

fauvist inspiration

Charles Camoin is well known for being a fauvist painter

but also had deep ties with expressionist/impressionist
painting because he enjoyed a slightly less garish paint
that is commonly found in fauvism, in order to depict
landscapes, such as the one on the left, and portrait
paintings. Because of his close relationship with the fauvist
artist matisse he was constantly inspired to combine
impressionist and fauvist elements in his pieces either in
coloring or overall feel. The harsh brush strokes and
splotches of saturated coloring hint at fauvist coloring and
the overall view of the impressionist brush strokes hint to
the obvious inspiration.

Camoin dabbling in expressionism and impressionism

Camoin never really thought of himself as a "Fauve".
Although a spontaneous painter who enjoyed using pure,
bright colour pigments in his,for instance, his "View of
Capri" remained more Impressionistic than Fauvist. in
impressionism emphasis on light and time play a huge
role in the piece because its highlighting the ordinary
subject matter impressionist recreate. There is also a lot of
emphasis on movement and and at times painting in
photographic visual angles inclusion of movement as a
crucial element of human perception and experience, and
unique visual angles..

The Fauvist principles were based on a total focus on unmixed paint

usually applied straight from the tube, often with very rushed and wild
brushstrokes as seen in his work. He would use unmixed paint to
obtain the vividness and intensity that were often applied with firm,
even violent brushwork. the subjects of the painting are then simplified
and have a flattened look to them at the same time containing a
certain amount of depth. He started to change his technique, and
began to focus more on light than colour. compared to other
fauvist painters such as henry matisse his still differed a bit
from the usual fauvism method because he was inspired by a
hint of expressionism which he liked to exploit ini a lot of his
paintings.

Charles Camoin
nature morte

Charles work tended to contain a subjective perspective

meaning existing in the mind; belonging to the thinking of
subject rather than to the object of thought pertaining to
the characteristic of an individual this is important because
it highlights the way Charles visually processes certain
things such as the subject in painting. He Solely distorts the
subject to convey certain moods, ideas, and emotions as it
correlates with expressionism art. Charles work tends to
contain highly intense but muted coloring and hard harsh
and cool subjects that give his work a one of a kind feel.

as you can see with the painting on the left,t there are
muted but intense colors created within the piece along
with a focused mood that convey a certain emotion of
being cold, yet elegant and beautiful. Although there is
not a lot movement in the background of his piece i
feel like that benefits the main focus of the piece and
why the piece works cohesively with all the different
elements that are in the piece.

The expressionist principles focus on texture. The texture in his

pieces provoke a feeling of being able to reach out and touch
the realistic fabric portrayed in the piece to the left. Charles has
also worked closely with mixed media aspects in his piece that
contribute to the depth and detail of entire piece. Charles
Emphasises a lot of different elements in his painting such as
mood, muted but intense colors, and the focused subject of the
piece, these main elements ensure that your explores the whole
piece instead of just glancing at the piece because of the fact
that there is much detail gives this piece a magnetic quality
were you never get tired of inspecting the pieces.
The principle of form trains your eye the subject's silhouette and
the feminine and elegant quality charles constantly portrays to
convey an interpretive meaning in their pieces. These
principles are essential to charles dwyers creation process.

the subject of charles darwin's pieces consist mostly of

showcasing the female form, they have an elegant almost quiet
intensity in the way they are presented when combined with the
intense yet muted colors charles uses.
The subject of his paintings also contain luminescent
qualities. They also contain a lot of depth and intricate
detail that is accomplished because charles dwyer
combines a lot of other mediums such as graphite, ink,
paint and pastel. To elevate his pieces to the next level,
making the subjects of high importance because his
subjects are commonly of women who have a victorian
feel to them, This can be directly correlated to the fact
that wyer like to pull his inspiration from 30s and 50s
time period fashion magazines. This could also explain
the quiet intensity the subjects seemed to contain,
exemplifying women were portrayed on earlier time
periods.

Charles Dwyers painting has a different

technique compared to charles camoin. He focuses on
layering heavily and methodically with mediums such
as pastel, ink, and oil to get this desired look. Whereas
Charles Camoin has very thick unmethodical brush
lines that aren't as meticulous as Dwyers piece to
communicate the idea of simplicity with his use of hard
thick lines and very little detailed background to further
bring the image to forefront yet still making the piece
cohesive which is something that Dwyer also achieves
in his pieces.Charles camoin has a way of painting
what he sees and then transforming it to fit his own
perception while dwyer uses his own subjective
perception and pulls a variety of different inspirations
such as decades old fashion magazines as i have
mentioned before.

both these works have an intensity of saturated

color yet it is balanced within their respective
spaces because of the way the black space is
utilized. Also both subjects of these paintings have

Charles Camoin- 1926

Charles Dwyer- Roxie

Both of these paintings have very different themes as

far as what the subject of these paintings are. Charles
dwyers painting, situated to the left, is highly technical
mixed media painting with a lot of texture and design
elements the make up the subject of the painting, The
subject of his painting is an elegant woman who
reflects someone of an earlier time period his piece is
chaotic yet quiet and elegant his use of space makes
your eye travel all over the painting. The subject of the
painting emulates a feeling of purity and innocence this
is well emphasized to offset the background. charles
camoins piece on the right depicts a less detailed
subject but the colors are brighter and more saturated
than dwyers painting and is more objective in theme
but subjective in line and in form thus emulating the
fauvist technique They both have a certain
concentration of texture formulated in their piece but
communicated in different ways.

Henri Matisse has been a major inspiration for both of

these artist and how they've grown into becoming their
unique approach to painting, matisse is heavily known for
being one of the most influential fauvist artist of his time.
Knowing that henri matisse was an artist that they have
both drawn inspiration from has made me realize the artist
they truly are. The simplicity and detailed elements of
matisses work have shone through in both Dwyers and
Camoins work.

Both of these artists work in different ways and create significantly different types
of artworks in their own separate mediums but what the have in common is the
effort they put into creating these pieces and the different ideas and perceptions
they create within the viewer. They have experimented and pulled so many
different inspirations to create the work they have and to inspire as many people
as they have. Theyve applied their own techniques create pieces that have their
own distinct look to them and them both having common inspirations that have
made them the artist they are today ,such as matisse, and the artist the started out
as.

When comparing my work to Charles Dwyer

I have found that there are similarities and
differences between our work. it is known that
Charles Dwyers creates his pieces using
subjective perspective, meaning that existing in
the mind; belonging to the thinking of subject
rather than to the object of thought, this can also
be said about my pieces such as my piece on
the left and charles dwyers piece on the right.
Both Of our pieces have the intention of
conveying certain moods and emotions for the
viewers own interpretation. We also both use
muted yet eye catching colors in unique ways
that hint at our own creative processes.

Charles Dwyer The wind has changed

when further examining charles dwyers

work I realized that has a more distinct
expressionist style to his pieces compared
to my some of my pieces such as my self
portrait featured on the left. In my piece I
take a more realistic approach which can be
seen in my line work and use of angles and
dimensions as compared to Charles Dyer's
piece on the left that has very messy brush
strokes and more of a repetitive color
palette. We both have different ways of
representing the female form and different
inspirations that inspire our pieces. I take
most of my inspiration from my environment
and cultural aspects of my life. Charles
dwyer's inspirations stem from 30s and 50s
time period fashion magazines.

Charles Dwyer Heloise

I took the time to examine differences

and similarities in my work and Charles
Camoins pieces. I have found that we
both like highly distinct saturated color
but we also use the interplay of muted
tones to give it a balanced feel that
communicate the level of intensity by
color that is represented in our work. For
example my work featured on the right
shows the blending of highly saturated
yet muted tones of color in my piece that
lets your eyes travel over everything my
piece has to offer, the same can be said
for charles piece on the right .

Charles Camoin
The Negress

through finding comparisons between charles

camoins work and my work i have located
major difference as well. Charles camoin has
more of an expressionist feel to his pieces
where my pieces are very diverse in medium
as well as artistic styling. I apply lots of layers
to my piece as well as making sure each color
is distinct. I like to work 2 dimensionally when
painting which is why i enjoy pop art so much
as you can see in my piece on the left my
inspirations mainly sted from pop art, as
contrasted to charles piece that is highly
inspired both by the fauvist and expressionist
art , as can be seen in his piece on the right
through his use of brush strokes and blending
of colors.
Charles Camoin Nude
Painting

Charles Camoin and charles dwyer have inspired me to create

my own pieces and have brought forth ideas for pieces that i
would've never thought of if it wasn't for the research i have
done over these artists. My piece featured on the top was
inspired by fauvism and charles camoins piece on the left.
Recently i have done a graphic manipulation piece that was
inspired by charles dwyer and his way of communicating female
empowerment and elegance through the human form. i was not
inspired by these artist pieces like the ones showcased above
would never have been created and has the impacted the way i
create future pieces.
