Overview of Base Ten Standards

Work with numbers 11-19 to gain understanding of place value

Extend the counting sequence (to 120)

Understand place value (understanding that a two digit number represents tens and ones)
Use place value and properties of operations to add and subtract (within 100 a two digit number and a one
digit number and adding a two digit number with a multiple of 10, subtracting a multiple of 10)
Understand place value (understand a three digit number represents hundreds, tens, and ones)
Use place value and properties of operations to add and subtract (add/subtract within a 1000 concretely and
using strategies)
Use place value and properties of operations to add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers (within 1000
using strategies and algorithms)
Use place value to round to the nearest 10, 100
Multiply a one digit whole number by multiples of 10 using strategies based on place value and operations
Utilize place value understanding for multi-digit whole numbers (understanding a digit represents ten times
what it represents in the place to its right)
Use place value and properties of operations to add, subtract, multiply and divide multi-digit whole numbers
(multiply up to a four digit number by a one digit number and multiply 2 two digit numbers and divide up to a
four digit dividend by a one digit divisor using strategies)
Round multi-digit whole numbers to any place

Understand the place value system (Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10
times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left)
Perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and decimals to the hundredths (multiply using the
standard algorithm/divide up to a four digit dividend by a two digit divisor/add, subtract, multiply, and divide
decimals up to hundredths using strategies based on place value

Overview of Geometry Standards

Identify and describe shapes (2-D or 3-D and relative position ex: above, below, beside, in
front of, behind)
Analyze, compare, create, and compose shapes
Reason with shapes and their attributes (defining attributes vs. non-defining attributes ex:
number of sides vs. color)
Partition circles and rectangles into halves and fourths
Reason with shapes and their attributes (recognize and draw shapes based on their
defining attributes, identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes)
Partition a rectangle into rows and columns to find the total number of same size squares
Partition circles and rectangles into halves, thirds, and fourths
Reason with shapes and their attributes (understand that shapes in different categories can
share attributes and these shared attributes can define a larger category ex: quadrilaterals)
(recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as quadrilaterals)

5

Partition shapes into parts with equal areas (express each part as a unit fraction of the
whole)
Draw and identify lines and angles and classify shapes by properties of their lines and
angles (lines, line segments, rays, angles, parallel lines, perpendicular lines, lines of
symmetry (introduced back in 2nd grade)
Graph points on the coordinate plane to solve real world problems
Classify 2-D figures into categories based on their properties
