Bearskin (Brothers Grimm)

The Grimms first published this tale under

the title "Der Teufel Grnrock" (Devil
Greenjacket) in the first edition of their
Kinder- und Hausmrchen, vol. 2 (1815), no.
15. They substantially revised the tale with
their fifth edition (1843).

About a man who gains a fortune and a

beautiful bride by entering into a pact with
the devil

Bearskin (Brothers Grimm) contd

The hero of the German version is a soldier.

The tale was collected at a time at which
many German kings were conscripting
many more men into their armies, and the
people of the country and town, who were
forced to pay taxes to support such new
armies and to house them. Soldiers often
left, whether by any discharge they could
get, or by deserting, and such an ex-soldier
often had to make his way in the world like
the hero of Bearskin.

The Initial Situation

Soldier lost his job after the war and is looking to make
ends meet.

In German times, the hero is a soldier. Many German kings

were recruiting many more men into their armies. The
people of the country and town were forced to pay taxes to
support such new armies and to house them. Soldiers often
left, whether by any discharge they could get, or by
deserting, and such an ex-soldier often had to make his
way in the world like the hero/soldier in the story.

The Interdiction

He can spend the money on anything he wants. He just

has to stay alive and cant wash himself.

Soldiers would typically have the habit of going to bars or

doing whatever they wish to do. So the devil is allowing the
soldier to do everything he wants to do. Thats one benefit
the soldier gets. And being a soldier, their natural instinct is
to stay alive. Not washing himself also ties in with a soldier
because they would often go days without washing,
although the story is an exaggeration (7 years).

Unrecognized

The devil cleaned up the soldier. He gave the youngest

daughter the other half of the ring in the wine glass and
thats when she realized who he was.

The devil promised the soldier that he would clean him up

and he kept his word. Beauty is valued in German
Romanticism and the devil made the soldier very
handsome.

First Function of
Donor

Test: The man couldnt wash or groom himself for 7

years
Reward: He can have all the money he wants if he
completes 7 years without washing or grooming

During this time period, people valued a strong soldier.

Going through the test of 7 years, it proved that he was
strong and the youngest daughter was given a strong man.
This meant a lot to people during that time period.

The Interdiction

The man was required not to cleanse his himself and he

could spend the money on what he pleased.

Women were usually handed down homes by their

husbands through the dowry system.

Unrecognized

When man returned, not even his fiance recognized him.

The war caused many people to emigrate because the

Sicilian economy did not adapt to the unification.

First Function of Donor

Test: The man had to stay filthy for a certain time frame in
order to be wealthy again.

During this time, links between families loosened and

individuals went their separate ways.

Reward: The devil would let him free and cleanse his body
if he fulfilled the time frame they agreed.

The Initial
Situation

A traveling journeyman stayed in an inn from tiredness, but

did not have the money to pay the cost.

Geographically requires a lot of strenuous traveling since

switzerland is a mountainous and landlocked country. Not
many noticeable contributions to wars - soldier replaced with
journeyman.

The Interdiction

He has to stay inside the inn for seven years, without

washing himself.

Forbidding a traveling journeyman to step out of an inn

means considerable constraints in social interactions and
career progress,

Unrecognized

The journeyman came back in a coach with golds and

gems, dressed like a young nobleman. Hes recognized
right away.

From the momentum of the industrialization, those who had

completed their way into the success and wealth were rated
very highly (masses of people were striving for economic
success).

First Function of
Donor

Test: A merchant asks the journeyman to pay his debts

Pauperism - many of switzerland sank into poverty &

economic depressions in 1840 - 1860. Those who were
investing greatly from the heat of industrialization had to face
failure.

Reward: The Merchant offered one of his beautiful

daughters in exchange
