Inthefinalquatrainofthepoem,aftertiringoframpagingacrosstheEarth,Ravanaasks,"WhenwillIbehappy?"Becauseoftheintensityofhis
prayersandasceticmeditation,ofwhichthishymnwasanexample,RavanareceivedfromShivatheboonofindestructibilitybyallpowerson

Itissaidthatwhenhewastiredoframpagingacrosstheearth,RavanareturnedtoLordShivatorequestmoksha,releasefromthebondageofendless
rebirth.LordShivarepliedthathehadgrantedRavanatheboonofindestructibility,andthatRavanamustinsteadseekmokshafromLord
Vishnu(Accordingtosrimadbhagavatamchapter6verses43to50itisclearthatShivaisordainingjivastospiritualworldandheavensetc.SoLord
Shivacangiveliberationtoanyone.Butravanawasjayawhoisguardingtheentranceoflordvishnu'sresidenceandcursedbyfoursonsofbrahma
andhisdestinyliesinthehandsoflordvishnu).InthisversionofRavana'sstory,hisbattlewithRamacanbeinterpretedasapretexttoattaindeath,
andthroughdeath,liberation.Ravana'spoignantcryinthefinalquatrainofpoetry"WhenwillIbehappy?"isechoedbymodernmaninhisquest
forearthlyfulfillmentandultimateliberationfromitsbondage.
Acompellingandcomplexpersonality,RavanaisformanyHindusalegendaryhero,ascholarofimmenseintelligenceandthedevotedhusbandof
oneoftraditionalfiveperfectwomen,Mandodari.RavanamarriedMaya'sdaughter,Mandodari,whowasaverybeautiful&righteouswife.Hehada
sonbyher,namedMeghanaada(whichmeansthe'soundoftheclouds'orthe'soundofthunder').MeghanaadadefeatedIndra,thekingofgods,and
earnedthetitleof'Indrajit'.Ravana'sgreatgrandfatherwasBrahma(GodofUltimateKnowledge).Hehadadvancedknowledgeofmathematics,
scienceandAyurveda.
Hewasobsessedwithhispowersandwasegoistic,andtodisplayandprovehispowershewasabouttomoveMountKailash(theabodeofShiva
whowashisancestorgod).HemanagedtoliftthemountainbutShivaimmediatelyplaceditbackjustbypressinghistoecrushingRavana'sfingers
intheprocess.ThatiswhenRavanasings"TandavStotra"andhewassparedandblessedwithchandrahas(moonswordbyLordShiva)considered
oneofthemostpowerfulweaponsinHinduMythology.
