Do Now

(you have 5 minutes after the bell to complete)

These are the most missed quiz questions from Friday:

1. Which 3 elements are found in organic

compounds? Which one is the most
common?
2. Where is the independent variable
placed on the graph? How do you know?
3. Which 2 tissues are responsible for
transporting water and nutrients
throughout a plant? Which organ system
is similar in humans?
4. What organ is responsible for
homeostasis? What are other examples
of organs?
5. Cells are less complex than organs.

Biochemistry
Module 2
Day 2 of 7

Ms. CLs Expectation #1

Every day students will:
1. silently enter the classroom
2. turn in any homework assignments
3. sit at assigned seat (will change
every Module starting with
Biochemistry)
4. independently begin Do Now
5. turn in Do Now and review notes

Ms. CLs Expectation #2

Students will earn 2 minutes of music (with
headphones) during
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
for every 5 minutes the class can go
without:
getting up without permission
2. shouting out answers w/o being called on
3. using cell phone
while Ms. CL is teaching (PowerPoint notes,
giving instructions, etc)
1.

SWBAT
differentiate between organic
and inorganic compounds
identify lipids and nucleic
acids as major organic
compounds
identify monomer and
function of both lipids and
nucleic acids

Lipids- Major Organic Compound

Lipids
https://youtu.be/eB793h16R8A

There are several types

of lipids, but all contain
monomers (subunits) of
glycerol ( backbone) and
fatty acids (chain).
One of a lipids function is
to Insulate and protect
organs in the body

Examples of Lipids

2 of 5

a. Fats can be saturated (usually solid at room

temperature) or unsaturated (usually liquid).
b. Phospholipids also contain a phosphate
group and make up most of the cell
membrane.
c. Steroids are lipid rings and help regulate the
organism through cell communication (act as
hormones)

Functions of lipids
a. Lipids can be used as very long-term
(weeks, months) energy sources.
Ex. Bears accumulate a layer of fat
before winter
b. Fats stored in the body act as insulation
and protection for internal organs.
c. Some hormones are composed of lipids
(steroids).

Nucleic Acids https://youtu.be/T5gEIViVAPw (2 mins)

Nucleic acids store

the code for genetic
heredity.
A nucleic acids monomer
(subunit) is a nucleotide. Many
nucleotides bond together to
make up a long chain called a
nucleic acid.

Nucleic acids allow traits to be passed

from parent to child (DNA)

There are two basic types of nucleic

acids:
DNA is a double chain of nucleotides found
in all living cells.
RNA is a single chain of nucleotides that
provides the structures needed for the cell
to make proteins.

Group activity
Lets graph our quiz scores!!!!!
1.You may work with 1 partner.
2.Your task is to create a graph based on
each blocks mean, median, and/or mode.
3.Make sure your graph has a Title,
Independent variable, Dependent
variable, and data.

SWBAT
differentiate between organic
and inorganic compounds
identify lipids and nucleic
acids as major organic
compounds
identify monomer and
function of both lipids and
nucleic acids

Independent Practice
Graphing worksheet
1.Individually complete the two graphing
problems.
2.When you are finished take this time to
complete any missing work.
3.If your grade in PowerSchool is not a 90%
or higher, get it there.
4.Work Hard. Get Smart.

Exit Ticket
1.What

are the functions of a lipid?

2.What is one example of a lipid?
3.What is the monomer of a nucleic acid?
4.What is a synonym for regulation?
5.What is one random fact youd like to learn
about me?
