Egyptian Revolution
In 2011 Egyptians started protesting against unemployment, poverty, and government
corruption. Protest was inspired by the successful revolution in Tunisia (Kanalley) and started
with a facebook page created to support Khaled Said who was tortured to death in Alexandria in
June of 2010. The facebook page belonged to any Egyptian who wanted to defend their
freedom. Egypt's military was corrupt and there President Hosni Mubarak wouldnt do anything
about it. There were ...more than 100,000 suicide attempts in 2009(Ghonim 343) and
millions of people living in poverty. The Egyptian Revolution is also referred to as the...Day of
Rage (Kanalley). While Egyptians started protesting in 2011 they still have not gained 100%
freedom, there still remains many struggles that the people and economy have had to face.
During the revolution there were ...30 million Egyptians suffering from depression...48
million poor citizens (Ghonim 343) and the highest rate of newborn deaths. Egypt has the
worlds worst hiring transparency and their ...rate of ambulance cars to citizens is 1:35,000
(Ghonim 343). Police forces have become the best way to humiliate and torture Egyptians and
everyone was dissatisfied and frustrated with the nation's condition. When protesting Egyptians
demanded poverty awareness, placing a 2 term policy on presidency, health and education

awareness, etc. While the Egyptian people were protesting peacefully, the police and military
were not. The first democratically elected leader was removed from office on July of 2013 but
that only led to more bloodshed. One person said Overall things have gotten much worse. Its a
police state once again. Many of the problems have not been solved (How much has changed
in a year).
Four years after 2011 the Egyptian Revolution is in a coma. Ragia Omran told CNN We
are in a worse off position than we were in the Mubarak years (Egypt Police Brutality).
Violence and torture in prisons and police stations have gone up. Nadim center documented in
2015 alone 474 deaths in police custody and 700 cases of torture (Egypt Police Brutality). A
young man talked to CNN and said With two wires they electrocuted me in the chest and
back (Egypt Police Brutality). Since the Revolution in 2011 Egypts economy and
government has not changed and there still remains many struggles for people who want to keep
their rights.
