The central coast’s Noelene Holloway was exercising greyhounds before and after school when in primary school but she was in her 40’s when she trained her first greyhound. Last Saturday night the happy go lucky redhead from Wyong was celebrating as her richly talented sprinter Magic Spring led throughout to win Australia’s most famous aged classic, the Group 1 National Derby. Magic Spring possesses brilliant speed and while he may have appeared adversely drawn in box six he had two slow begin- ners, Nangar Flame and Good Odds Ocker, drawn on his outside. Magic Spring had to lead to win the Derby Final and he did just that. The son of Spring Gun and Wentworth Park 2015 Dam Of The Year Fascinate Marina outpaced the other Derby finalists to the first turn and he never looked likely to be run down. Magic Spring led by a length from Asa Killa Queen and Pedro Cerrano past the 720 metre boxes and he put a big gap between himself and the chasers approaching the home turn. At the finishing line Magic Spirng ($8.10) had 4 ¾ lengths to spare from Nangar Flame ($5.70) with Victorian Diego Bale ($7.30) third in 29.96. Magic Spring bred, owned and trained by Holloway, has won fourteen races with nine placings from 33 starts. The $75,000 first prize took his prize- money to $135,195. Magic Spring has won ten races at Wentworth Park. The speedster is a much underrated sprinter. He is the Maitland 450 metre track record holder and he finished third in the star studded 2015 Ballarat Cup. For Holloway it was her first Group 1

winner but not her first Group 1 runner. Queen Esther finished second behind Rue De Khan in the 2014 Group 1 National Futurity Final at Unibet Gardens. Another of her team, Queen Marina, was

a National Distance Championship finalist

at Cannington after winning the NSW Final. The triumphant trainer was enjoying a celebratory lunch with family and friends at the home of her parents George and Joan Singline when I called on Sunday. “It was an amazing win and a great night,” Noelene beamed. “Magic Spring can never be written off as his good early speed always puts him in a good spot. To win a Derby is a dream come true. “My dad George Singline won the Group

1 Vic Peters Classic at Harold Park back in

1969.

“He gives me plenty of tips about train- ing. I have had an incredible run since I started training. “I have four sisters and we were more or less born with a greyhound lead in our hand. As we were growing up we were always assisting mum and dad with the breaking in dogs and their dogs in work. “Mum and dad had a very busy breaking in business - it was so popular. “I drifted away from the greyhounds when I got married and raised two sons who are now 29 and 30. “After my marriage break-up I moved back in with mum and dad and my sister Lorraine Atchison gave me a pup and later I took out a trainers licence in 2008. The pup Lorraine gave me raced as Fascinate Marina and I trained her to win seven races at Wentworth Park. “She had 125 starts and when she retired

I bred with her and I struck gold. I kept four from the litter Queen Esther, Queen Marina, Fascinate Mary and King Sapphire and all won races at Wentworth Park. Queen Esther won sixteen at Wenty. “Magic Spring is one of Fascinate Marina’s second litter which includes for- mer Maitland record holder Big Tee Rex, Queen Audrey, a 30.05 Wentworth Park winner, and One Samuel a Maitland 24.95

When I sent the dog to Kel Greenough for the Ballarat Cup Brendan drove him down in the car.

“I am very grateful to Barry Richardson who checks my dogs. Magic Spring will trial at Bulli this week and if he goes okay I will nominate him for the Cup. “I am continuing to breed. Queen Esther has been served by Dyna Double One and Fascinate Marina by Dyna Villa,” Holloway added. Proud parents George and Joan watched the race at home on Sky Racing.

THE countdown to the fast-approaching Australian Cup Carnival has stepped up a gear with the Melbourne Greyhound Racing Association (MGRA) announcing the invitations for the three Group 1 events to be held at The Meadows on Saturday, February 20. The $100,000 to-the-winner Temlee (525m) as well as the Rookie Rebel (600m) and Zoom Top (725m), both carrying a first prize of $75,000, will headline the opening night of the Australian Cup Carnival. 62 of Australia’s finest greyhounds – and two of New Zealand’s - have been invited to nominate for the three Group 1 invita- tionals, with expressions of interest closing next Monday (February 8) and the final fields to be unveiled on Tuesday night on The Catching Pen on Sky Racing. The box draw for the three Group 1s will be conducted on course at The Meadows next Saturday (February 13). Andrea Dailly’s superstar Dyna Double One is one of only five greyhounds invited to nominate for two events, with the Melbourne Cup winner in contention for both the Temlee and middle distance Rookie Rebel after breaking the Sandown 595m record last Thursday night. An international flavour was added to the invitation lists with the inclusion of Kiwi duo Dyna Vikkers, a multiple Group 1-win- ning litter brother to Dyna Double One, and star stayer Shandell, the reigning NZ

Greyhound of the Year. The invitees for the three races, in alpha- betical order, are:

Zoom Top (725m): Absolute Power, Ada Mary, Beks, Bourbski Fever, Come On Fantasy, Callum’s Mum, It’s A Plane, Kilkee Flex, Lady Toy, Lithgow Panther, Luna Jinx, No Donuts, Ryno’s Raider, Seeking Justice, Shall She Rock, Shandell, Space Star, Tricky Mover and Whittaker.

Temlee (525m): Above All, Amaro Bale, Asa Flying Spur, Ballerino, Bearville Azza, Berzerk, Black Bear Lee, Black Illusion, Brad Hill Billy, Cash In Motion, Dalgetty, Deadly Boy, Dyna Double One, Dyna Tiber, Dyna Vikkers, Elfen Bale, Ernest Bale, Fantastic Skye, Fantastic Spiral, Fever Pitch, Harlon, Kayda Shae, Knight Sprite, Magic Spring, Margins, Mepunga Armagh, Mrs Bubbles, Shared Equity, Smart Missile, Unlawful Entry, Weblec Belle, Worm Burner and Zambora Brockie.

Rookie Rebel (600m): Absolute Power, Cosmic Owl, Deadly Boy, Dyna Double One, Emrys, Grand Intention, It’s A Blast, Jaycee, Kilkee Flex, Linco Bale, Lithgow Panther, Moreira, Norm The Storm, Polijuice Potion, Sisco Rage, Xtreme Knocka and Yadi.

Dyna’s Record Middle Distance Debut

2016 Page 5 Dyna’s Record Middle Distance Debut written by Gerard Guthrie MELBOURNE Cup hero Dyna

written by

Gerard Guthrie

MELBOURNE Cup hero Dyna Double One made a sensational middle distance debut at Sandown Park last Thursday night when breaking Bobby Boucheau’s five- year-old 595m track record. Dyna Double One, a March ’13 son of Barcia Bale and Crystin Bale, claimed back- to-back Group 1 sprint titles in late 2015, running down champion kennelmate Fernando Bale in an unforgettable finish to the Melbourne Cup, after which he won the Brisbane Cup. But after winning a heat of the Hobart Thousand, the Andrea Dailly-trained super- star’s form tapered off with four straight defeats – the longest losing sequence of his 49-start career - as he struggled to mix racing and stud duties. Hoping to spark a return to form, Team Dailly decided to step Dyna Double One up to 595m at Sandown last Thursday and the move paid off handsomely. Returning to the scene of his Melbourne Cup triumph, Dyna Double One started $1.60 favourite from box five in a 4/5th grade event and relished the rise in dis- tance, jumping straight to the front as he defeated the game Grand Intention by three lengths in a new course record of

33.63.

The time eclipsed former star stayer Bobby Boucheau’s previous record of 33.67, established in January 2011, and is the second track record on Dyna Double One’s resume, as he also holds the Albion Park 520m benchmark at 29.51. “He went like a beauty but it didn’t take

a rocket scientist to work out he could run

600,” co-trainer George Dailly said. “He runs home at The Meadows in 10.80 every single time when he gets a clear run so he was going to run 600 metres on his ear. “His form had been a little bit ordinary over 500 the last few weeks but he’s been doing a lot of stud work and that’s all he’s been thinking about. “Dyna Double One never puts in a bad run so when he doesn’t perform you know something is going on. It’s our job to get the best out of the dog on the track so we decided to step him up to try and switch him on again and fortunately it worked. “We were hoping he’d get out better and

I think that’s only the second time in his

life he’s jumped straight on the bunny. The other time was in his Melbourne Cup heat. “The second dog (Grand Intention) got a bit close and I thought he mightn’t be

going that well but when the time came up he’d broken the record and that record has been around for a while.” Dyna Double One has now won 26 from 49 with earnings of $813,076, placing him

third on the all-time Australian prizemoney list behind only Fernando Bale and Sweet

It Is.

With the Australian Cup Carnival fast approaching, Dyna Double One’s record-breaking display at Sandown has given the Dailly kennel plenty of food for thought. Dyna Double One has received invitations for both the Group 1 Temlee over 525m and Group 1 Rookie Rebel over 600m, which along with the Group 1 Zoom Top over 725m will headline the opening night of the Cup Carnival at The Meadows on February 20. “The question now will be whether he’ll go to the Temlee or the Rookie Rebel,” Dailly offered. “The Temlee is worth a bit more but he could be looking at four or five backsides and mightn’t get into the race. Tom (brother) and Andrea are overseas at the moment but I’ll discuss it with them and we’ll work out which way to go but I’ll nominate him for a 600 at The Meadows this Saturday in case we decide to go to the Rookie Rebel.”

Cooke Lands Futurity Jackpot

Casino bitch Cash In Motion’s will to win can never be questioned after the black bitch produced another exciting last to first performance to snatch victory in last Saturday night’s Group 1 National Futurity Final. As was the case in a National Futurity heat a week earlier, Cash In Motion was a con- spicuous last on the run to the first turn in Saturday’s final. She jumped much better on Saturday but another Casino bitch Mitcharlie Mia squeezed her up and relegated her to the tail. Victorian Lyka Allan and Fantastic Skye disputed the lead through the first split. Another Victorian Dyna Maddie, easily the fastest heat winner and the $3.40 favourite, was flattened and put out of business before the first turn. Lyka Allen and Fantastic Skye led down the back with Mitcharlie Mai close up and Cash In Motion warming up midfield. When the home turn was reached Lyka Allen and Fantastic Skye were still the front runners but Cash In Motion was running home strong. In a blanket finish with one length sepa- rating the first four bitches across the line Cash In Motion ($4.50) got there by a nose. Lyka Allen ($22.80) and Fantastic Skye ($6.10) filled the placings in 30.29. Cash In Motion only had her first start in May and she has come a long way since. From 33 starts she has 16 wins and six placings and prizemoney of $178,296. Amongst Cash In Motion’s wins were the 2015 Ipswich Cup and she was runner-up in the Ipswich Futurity. The daughter of Smooth Fancy and

Teddy’s Jackpot has a penchant for Albion Park where she has won eleven races and she has broken 30 seconds there seven times. At the weekend it was announced that Cash In Motion is a finalist in the 2015 Queensland Greyhound Of The Year. The National Futurity was a triumph for semi-retired Casino welder Robert Cooke. The latter has been training since 1991 and the National Futurity was the first time he had a Group 1 runner. Cooke bred, races and trains Cash In Motion on his five acre property at Woodview five kilometres from Casino. “She likes to do it the hard way but it was- n’t her fault this time,” Cooke said. “Mitcharlie Mia squeezed her up and she was thrown out the back. Cash In Motion is a very good chaser and she never gives up. “My first Group 1 runner and a winner it is special. I have only had a few Wentworth Park runners. “Albion Park is so much closer and the prizemoney has been good so it made sense to head north. “I never had time to trial Cash In Motion at Wentworth Park so I believe her first look in the Paws Of Thunder heat was a great benefit. “She is one of Albion Park’s top sprinters and she had no luck in the Gosford Cup Final after her fastest heat win. “I left Stratheden nine years ago but Charlie, his father Bill and brother Mitchell taught me so much about the greyhounds. I am 55 years old and still do some welding but with twelve dogs in the racing kennels I don’t have a lot of time. I have been very fortunate to train some smart dogs. “Hot Syrup won 49 races for me many years back and I have a very smart litter brother to Cash In Motion. Major Jackpot is his name and he has won five with three placings from nine starts. “He has won two over the short-course at

JUNE Barnett, wife of legendary Hunter

Valley owner-breeder Bill Barnett and the mother of well known current trainer Graeme, passed away last Thursday morn- ing, aged 86. "Mum and dad had celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary only a couple of months ago,'' Graeme said. June and Bill Barnett were owners of Test Pattern, who dead-heat- ed with Seraphino in the 1963 Vic Peters Classic at Harold Park, before rac- ing Chariot Charm, who won the 1965 National Derby at Wentworth Park when trained by Lex Landers. "Of course their best greyhound was See Yah, which dad trained to win the 1987 St Leger at Wentworth Park,'' Graeme recalled. "But they also bred the champion stayers Farrarami and Brettianly, which they sold, and

winner of the 1998 Association Cup at Wentworth Park,'' Graeme recalled.

Robert Cooke’s star bitch Cash In Motion was a worthy victor of the Group 1 National Futurity coming from well back to take out the $75,000 to-the-winner final

Albion Park and he has won a fifth grade heat and final up the straight at Capalaba. “On Australia Day Major Jackpot broke Paw Licking’s Lismore 420 metre record when he won a fifth grade by 12 ¼ lengths in 23.73. “He trials quicker than Cash In Motion but is injury plagued. Master Jackpot is another smart sprinter in my kennel. “He has won 13 from 26 including four at Albion Park. I have nominated Cash In Motion for Albion Park on Thursday.

“All going well I will probably come back to Sydney for the Easter Egg. I have been told I may receive an invitation for the Temlee. “Unfortunately Teddy’s Jackpot, the moth- er of these dogs, passed away three months ago after producing four litters. “By the way I drove home through the night on Saturday arriving at 7.45am Sunday. “I hit a kangaroo near Macksville,” Cooke added.

back up to Bulli next week for the Cyril Rowe Gold Cup heats because he loves Bulli. “We were probably going to retire him

after the Golden Easter Egg anyway but it would’ve been nice for him to go out on his own terms.” Prior to suffering a serious stopper bone injury while preparing for the 2014 Topgun, Tommy Brislane had emerged as one of Australia’s most exciting sprinters. The well-bred September ’12 son of Premier Fantasy and Mary Virginia won 12 of his first 16 starts, highlighted by back- to-back feature victories in the Group 1 Dapto Megastar and Group 2 Bob Payne Spring Sprint in September 2014. However, injury sadly ruined the remain- der of his career, restricting him to just nine more starts. After moving to Victoria in late 2015 when Steve White relocated from Nowra to Buln Buln East, near Warragul, Tommy Brislane made a triumphant return to the track when scoring at Warragul on October

INJURY has finally got the better of star sprinter Tommy Brislane, with the Group 1 winner retired to stud after breaking a hock while trialling at Warragul last Friday morning. Steve White, who did a remarkable job to nurse Tommy Brislane back to the track after more than a year on the sidelines with a career-threatening stopper bone injury, relayed the bitterly disappointing news to The Recorder en route to Sandown Veterinary Clinic. “It’s not the way I wanted him to go out,” a downcast White said. “We’d done so much hard work to get him back to the track and he was flying again. “I’d had some tonsillitis problems with him going into the Cranbourne and Warragul Cups but I had him right again and I was looking forward to bringing him

He also won at The Meadows and took out a heat of the Group 2

Cranbourne Cup last month, before his injury curse struck again. Retiring with a 15 from 25 record and $175,000 in prizemoney, Tommy Brislane underwent surgery on Monday and after recovering he’ll embark on a stud career with his service fee $1100. “He’s got a couple of litters on the ground already and there’s been plenty of inter- est from breeders so we’ll give him six to eight weeks to recover and then he’ll start stud duties,” White said. While White won’t be returning to NSW with Tommy Brislane for the heats of the Golden Easter Egg on March 12, he does intend to target NSW’s richest race with Rare Pearl, an October ’12 son of Bekim Bale and La Pearl, which has finished

Sid Swain has a couple of handy litter sis- ters on his hands in the shape of recent back-to-back victors Madam Anne and Madam Scarlet. By Goodesy out of former short-course flyer Katie’s Tears, win- ner of 23 races, the well-bred pair secured winning doubles at Richmond and Bathurst recently. Madam Scarlet land- ed wins at Richmond and Bathurst in 30.98 and 29.89, while Madam Anne posted 31.05 and 30.05 for her victories.

third in the Group 2 Cranbourne Cup and sec- ond in the Listed Australian Sprint at Sandown in recent weeks. “Rare Pearl has been a different dog since he came down to Victoria,” White offered. “He ran second in the Listed race (Australian Sprint) at Sandown last week and then last night (Thursday) he gave the leader (Jesaulenko) six lengths and only got beat- en three-quarters of a length in 29.13.” While Tommy Brislane’s retirement will leave a sizeable void in White’s kennel, he has “no regrets whatsoever” about his move to Victoria. “I honestly wish I’d come down to Victoria years ago,” White said. “It was a big call to make the move and it’s taken us a couple of months to get organised and get used to every- thing but Victoria is defi- nitely the place to be with

the tracks, facilities, prizemoney and administration. “I’ve got some really nice young dogs
