10.1 Exploring Quadratic Graphs

y = ax2 + bx + c
y = x2
The parent graph

Parabola: the U shaped line

Vertex: the minimum or maximum point

axis of symmetry

y = x2

y = x2 + 2

y = x2 - 2

y = x2

y = 2x2

y = 5x

y = x2

y = .1x2

y = .01x

y = -x2

y = -2x2

y = -5x

y = x2 + x

y = x2 + x + 1

Vertex:
the maximum point

y = x2

Counter Intuitive!!
If a is positive and b is positive the graph shifts to the left as the b value increases. At
this point, were not going to worry about what happens when a and b are negative.

10.2 Quadratic Functions

To graph a linear function, the important information is the y-intercept and
the slope.
y = mx + b
slope

y = 4x + 1

To graph a quadratic function, the important information is the y-intercept,

the axis of symmetry, the vertex, and the x-intercepts.

Vertex: Put the point from the axis of

symmetry into the equal for x. Solve for y.

y = x2 + 5x + 6

Graph y = x2 + 2x + 1
Label the axis of symmetry and the vertex.
Step 1: Plot the y-intercept. If x = O, what is y?
y = x2 + 2x + 1
Step 2: Find the axis of symmetry.
x = -b
2a

Step 3: The axis of symmetry goes through the vertex. Plug x value from the axis of
symmetry into the equation to determine the y value of the point.

Step 4: Find the x-intercepts. **We will do this in the next lessons.**

Graph y = -x2 + 4x - 1
Label the axis of symmetry and the vertex.
Step 1: Plot the y-intercept. If x = O, what is y?
y = x2 + 2x + 1
Step 2: Find the axis of symmetry.
x = -b
2a

Step 3: The axis of symmetry goes through the vertex. Plug x value from the axis of
symmetry into the equation to determine the y value of the point.

Step 4: Find the x-intercepts. **We will do this in the next lessons.**

Graph y = 2x2 + 3x + 1
Label the axis of symmetry and the vertex.
Step 1: Plot the y-intercept. If x = 0, what is y?
y = x2 + 2x + 1
Step 2: Find the axis of symmetry.
x = -b
2a

Step 3: The axis of symmetry goes through the vertex. Plug x value from the axis of
symmetry into the equation to determine the y value of the point.

Step 4: Find the x-intercepts. **We will do this in the next lessons.**

Deriving the vertex formula?

y = ax2 + bx + c
The axis of symmetry will be vertical. The axis of symmetry will go the x-axis and will
be perpendicular to the x-axis. Thus the equation for the axis of symmetry will be x =
#. The point on the x-axis that the axis of symmetry goes through will be (#,0).
So for the quadratic equation, the y value is 0.
0 = ax2 + bx + c
c is the y-intercept so that is 0 also.
0 = ax2 + bx + 0
In other words..
0 = ax2 + bx
Factor out an x (well do this in 10.5)
0 = x(ax + b)
According to the multiplication property of zero, either x or ax + b has to be zero.
ax + b = 0
Rearrange so that x is by itself.

ax + b = 0
- b -b
ax = -b
a
a
x = -b

10.3 Finding and Estimating Square Roots

In linear functions (aka linear equations) the highest term is x2. Thus
square roots are very important. This is a quick overview of square roots.

If the square root symbol is already printed on the page, then the answer is only
positive.
9 = 3
If the square root symbol is already printed on the page and there is a negative
symbol in front of it, then the answer is negative. -9 = -3
If you are solving an equation and YOU write the square root symbol, then there are
TWO answers.one negative and one positive.
x2 = 9
x2 = 144
x2 = 4 .

Note: In Algebra 1
the square root of
negative numbers is
UNDEFINED

10.5 Factoring to Solve Quadratic Equations

To graph a quadratic function, the important information is the y-intercept,
the axis of symmetry, the vertex, and the x-intercepts.
y = ax2 + bx + c
the width
of the graph

- = frowning

y-intercept

Axis of Symmetry = -b
2a

Vertex: Put the point from the axis of

symmetry into the equal for x. Solve for y.

x-intercept: when y equals 0.

To solve quadratic equations:
1. Graph
2. Factor **this lesson**
3. Complete the square
4. Use the quadratic formula

When a graphed, a quadratic equation forms a parabola. When the parabola

intersects with the x-axis, the y value is 0.

y = x2 + 5x + 6

Therefore..
0 = x2 + 5x + 6
Were going to use the zero-product property..
Zero-Product Property
Any number times 0 = 0
n*0=0

So we need to rearrange the quadratic equation so that it involves multiplication.

Were going to FACTOR!!!!!!!
0 = x2 + 5x + 6
x2
6

0 = (x + 2)(x + 3)
So either binomial needs to be equal to 0.
(x + 2) = 0 or (x + 3) = 0
Solve for x.
x = -2 or x = -3
Therefore, the parabola intersects the x-axis at (-2, 0) and (-3,0).

1. y = x2 + 3x 28

2. y = x2 + 3x 4

3. -5 = 2x2 7x

Zoomed in.

10.6 Completing the Square to Solve Quadratic Equations

10.7 Using the Quadratic Formula

to Solve Quadratic Equations
To graph a quadratic function, the important information is the y-intercept,
the axis of symmetry, the vertex, and the x-intercepts.
y = ax2 + bx + c
the width
of the graph
+ = smiling
- = frowning
# = narrower
# = wider

shift

when a is +
+# = shift left
-# = shift right

y = x2 + 5x + 6
y-intercept

Axis of Symmetry = -b
2a

Vertex: Put the point from the axis of

symmetry into the equal for x. Solve for y.

x-intercept: when y equals 0.

To solve quadratic equations:
1. Graph
2. Factor
3. Complete the square (Algebra 2)
4. Use the quadratic formula **this lesson**

When a graphed, a quadratic equation forms a parabola. When the parabola

intersects with the x-axis, the y value is 0.

If the quadratic equation is difficult to factor, you can use the QUADRATIC FORMULA.

Deriving the Quadratic Formula:

Note: most of the problems for this lesson can be factored. However, you are expected
to use the quadratic formula. You can factor to check your answer.
From the book p. 548:
1. x2 + 6 = 5x

2. 2x2 + 4x 7 = 0

3. -3x2 + 5x 2 = 0

10.8 Using the Discriminate

Efficient: being lazy in a good way
If the parabola doesnt go through the x-axis, then why bother going through all the
work? You can use the discriminate to determine if the parabola will going through
the x-axis.

The discriminate

If b2 4ac > 0, there are 2 solutions.

If b2 4ac = 0, there is 1 solutions.
If b2 4ac > 0, there are NO solutions.

y = x2 6x + 3
x2 6x + 3 = 0

y = x2 6x + 9
x2 6x + 9 = 0

y = x2 6x + 12
x2 6x + 12 = 0
