formal language, but the individual is showing a respectful attitude. When one addresses
friends he or she uses a different type of casual expressions such as vato or Gey which
are manners to address friends or even Arre that can be used as an Ok. People usually
communicate via text message or phone calls, yet one can use a different variety of ways that
include notes, birthday cards or through sites such as Facebook. Conversation in this
community may vary depending on the person one is talking to, due to the fact that people
will not talk about the same things with friends compared to their family. In this discourse
community one should speak in a casual manner and depending on the person, foul language
may be used.
Thirdly, the Catholic Church communitys the main goal is to learn about religion,
therefore a person must be respectful when having a conversation about this topic. To join the
church community the individual must have completed the sacrament of confirmation and
meet the requirements necessary, and they may vary depending on the ministry the person
might want to serve. Church can be considered a community in which one can either use a
casual language with no profanities or a formal language depending on the person involved in
the conversation. This community is similar to school due to the fact that surveys,
presentations, reports and essays about religion are the way of discourse used, but individuals
also have other activities that require THE INDIVIDUAL to have a conversation with peers.
In conversations the phrases May the Lord be with you or Bless you will be used by both
the individual and his or her peers. This community may seem to be a lot of work but it is also
fun, its main objective is to teach anyone that learning about God is important but it does not
mean that it is something boring to do.
Lastly, an online blog is a community where one can express opinions on whatever subject
he or she wishes and find people that could share that same opinion or not. It is a community
that is probably one of the easiest to become a part of, due to the fact that all you need is a
computer or smart phone that has internet. In this community the individual may use essays,
notes, short stories, images or videos to express points of view. In this community individuals
will find all types of people including the ones that might hate their work also known as
haters and they might use profanity to express their hatred towards the work posted. On the
other hand one might find people that have an interest for his or her work and they will post
encouraging messages which might include things such as You da best or Love ya
comments such as LOL or LMAO may also be found, and they are considered a form of
casual speech.
Each one of these communities share similar aspects and have differences which makes
them unique, being a part of one of these communities also makes you unique. You express
yourself in different ways, you use different words, and you do different activities. These
communities show different manners in which one can communicate with peers. Everyone
has different discourse communities but the ones that influence me the most are school, my
family and friends, church, and, finally, my online blog.
