PLANNING

INTERVENTIONS

After 48 hours
of nursing
interventions,

Encourage mother
to breastfeed as
soon as possible.

> Mother will

be able to
increase milk
production and
identify ways to
produce more
milk; > baby
will be able to
gain weight,
feel content
after feeding;
have normal
urine output
and bowel
movements.

Advise mother to
Breast-feed often
Advise mother to
not skip breastfeeding sessions.
Teach mother to be
alert to feeding
problems
Advise mother to
avoid alcohol and
nicotine
If the baby is
sleepy, try
switching sides
frequently,
alternating
positions, or even
undressing him to
keep him awake
and interested

RATIONALE

Waiting too long to start

breast-feeding can
contribute to a low milk
supply. Hold baby skin to
skin right after birth and
the baby will likely breastfeed within the first hour
after delivery.
For the first few weeks, the
baby must be breast-feed
at least every two to three
hours round-the-clock.
Breast-feeding less often
can contribute to a low
milk supply. Frequent
nursing sessions stimulate
the body to produce more
milk. Be sure to offer both
breasts at each feeding
If mother spends time
away from the baby, teach
mother to pump breasts to
help protect milk supply.
It's okay for the baby to

a feeding but if this
happens regularly, the milk
supply will decrease. Teach
mother to pump the other
breast to relieve pressure
and protect milk supply
until the baby begins
taking more at each
feeding.
Drinking moderate to
heavy amounts of alcohol
can decrease milk
production. Smoking can
have the same effect.
A sleepy baby may need to
be awakened and
encouraged to nurse more
vigorously (thus
stimulating your glands to
produce more milk).
An exhausted underfed
mom is not an efficient
milk machine.
A low thyroid level is
known to reduce milk
supply.
