Source:
Kinder art, C. Iliades (The healing power of creative therapy for depression, August 30, 2012)
Equipment Needed:
Large thick paper, paint, paper towels, newspapers, water, painting smocks, pencils, crayons, paint
trays, and paint brushes.
Activity Description:
During this activity the participants will be asked to create painting based on their feelings or
emotions.
Facilitator should begin by talking about what emotions are and asking participants what type of
emotions they might experience on a day to day basis. Next talk about different colors and how
they might make individuals feel. Another topic to mention is the use of lines and how they are
drawn. Ask the participants to draw what they believe are happy line, angry lines, and lines that
express emotion.
Using various colors, shapes, lines, and textures individuals will create an emotions or feeling that
they would like to express.
Allowing individuals to work as long as they need to create the final painting encourage them to
occasionally take a step back to think about if the painting is moving the direction they had planned
for it to move in. Are their feelings starting to emerge in the painting?
After the painting are complete, hang the paintings up and allow other individuals to view them
and interrupt them.
Leadership Consideration:
Creative therapy or art therapy helps individuals with depression get in touch with their feelings.
This type of therapy can be used to identify and change negative thought that those with depression
might have. The facilitator is likely to find reduced motivation for participation when dealing with
individuals with depression. The facilitator should identify reasonable target outcomes for
participation and identify strengths that might aid in the recovery process. Methods of interactions
may differ depending on the severity of the depression.
