Dem Bones

By Adele Lowen
- Read/Sing Dem Bones by Bob Barner
- Discuss the instrument the skeletons are playing - names of the instruments and
the instrument family they come from
- explain to the students that this is a spiritual song - it talks about the Lord and
was sung in church long ago
- For older students, you can explain to them some of the history of the song,
according to Wikipedia:
Dem Bones also called Dry Bones and Dem Dry Bones is a well-known spiritual
song. The melody was composed by African-American author and songwriter James
Weldon Johnson. Some sources also credit his brother, J Rosomond Johnson. First
recorded by Bascomb Lunsford in February 1928, Brunswick 231. Both a long and a
shortened version of the song are widely known. The lyrics are inspired by Ezekiel 37:114, where the Prophet visits the "Valley of Dry Bones" and prophesies that they will one
day be resurrected at God's command, picturing the national resurrection of Israel.
- explain to the students there is a secular version of this song (secular music does
not talk about church things) so some of the words are the same but some have
been changed
- watch Doing The Skeleton Dance *click the link below
- have the students sing and dance along, matching the skeleton movements in
the video *explain that the we are the mirror image of the skeleton so when we
shake our hands to the left/right, we do the opposite of the skeleton
*Look at the pictures in the Display section of the website for a musical
Halloween bulletin board done based on this song.
