VOCABULARY LIST
Compound time signature when the main beat can be divided in threes. E.g. 6/8,
9/8, 12/8.
Compression - a studio effect which narrows the dynamic range of the music.
Delay electronic effect where a sound is repeated after a delay.
Distortion an electronic effect added to the guitar to make it sound distorted.
Drop-D tuning when the bottom string of the guitar is tuned down a tone; from D
to E.
EQ short for equalisation. It means electronically altering the frequencies in a sound
(you just need to know the name of this effect).
Flanger - studio effect which includes 2 identical sounds, creating a swirling sound.
Overdubs - the use of multi-track recording to layer recorded parts.
Pizzicato playing a string instrument by plucking the strings.
Power chords chords commonly played on the guitar (because they are easy); only
the root and fifth are played.
Reverb - a studio effect which gives the impression of the music being performed in a
bigger space.
Slide - using a metal device to slide the finger from one note to another on a guitar.
Telephone effect - an EQ effect that makes the sound much thinner, like a voice on
the telephone.
Tremolo an arm on guitar which when pressed creates a scoop sound.
Whisper when the strings are plucked with the volume down, then the volume is
turned up quickly.
