THE RAILWAY CHILDREN

IMPORTANT EVENTS IN THE NOVEL

1. The children prevent a terrible train accident during a landslide.

One day, Bobby, Peter and Phyllis saw a landslide when they were walking on top of a
hill beside the railway track. The railway line is blocked. Then, they realise that the 11.29
train has not passed yet. The children want to stop the train from colliding with the
landslide. Phyllis suggests that they use their red coats as flags to warn the train. This
event stuck on my mind because of the brilliance shown by the children. Phyllis knew the
red colour will catch the attention of the train driver far more quickly than other colours,
thus suggesting using their red petticoats.
Even after waving their red coats, the train travels very fast and the children are
worried that the train will not be able to stop. Therefore, Bobby runs onto the track and
waves her two flags. This parts is also memorable for me because I feet touched by
Bobbys willingness to risk her own life to save the train. After Bobbys attempt, the train
only stops 20 meters away from her.
The childrens bravery and quick thinking help to save the train and its passengers from
a terrible accident.
2. The children rescue Jim.
One day, Bobby, Peter and Phyllis want to watch an event near the railway line. They
can see a group of boys enter the railway tunnel. The las boy in the group is wearing a
red shirt. The children go across the hilltop to see the boys come out of the other end of
the tunnel. They notice the boy in the red shirt does not come out. They are worried
about him. I like this part as well because the children showed compassion towards a
boy they barely even knew. After that, the children want to look for the boy inside the
tunnel. In the tunnel they can see the boy lying quietly beside the railway line. The boy
broke his leg and cannot walk. Then, Peter and Phyllis ask for help from a nearby farm
while Bobbie waits with the boy. I also like this part because I really admire Bobbys
willingness to wait in the tunnel with the boy just to keep him company. Then, some men

from the farm help carry the boy, Jim, to the childrens home. Next day, the Old
Gentleman who is the boys grandfather arrives.
Their bravery in helping Jim brings their relationship with the Old Gentleman closer.
