Questions and Answers Pertaining to DCPL-2010-R-0007 Georgetown Library Furniture, Fixtures and Equipment

Q1. Solicitation, Page 4, "Additive Alternates"

"Type f" is identified as "Reading Tables of various sizes per A-5.74 (23) each total." However, sheet A-5.74 shows only one size for table type "f" and drawings include only (19) such tables. Please Clarify.

Q2. Solicitation, Page 5, "Breakout Item List"

"Item 06" refers to four types of tables including type "m." The Furniture Schedule on sheet A-5.52, includes (25) tables "m" to be located in Public Meeting Room (No. 007 on drawing A-5.70.) However, layout of room 007, does not include any table type "m". Please confirm quantity and location.

A2. This is correct. There are (25) Type "m" tables in Public Meeting Room.

Q3. "Item 10" refers to four types of Peabody Room file and storage cabinets.

However, specifications section 12560, and other sections, do not include any specs for items "EQ-Il, EQ-12, and EQ-13." Please clarify.

A.3 EQ-1I, EQ-12 and EQ-13 are called out at the beginning of the furniture specification and they weren't part of our casework drawings.

Q4. Solicitation, Attachment 1.2, Bid Package Scope of Work:

Page 91 states that scope of work includes DIVISION I, Section 01351, entitled "Special Procedures for Historic Treatment." However, Total Price Break Down list, page 5, does not provide a line item regarding this section. Please clarify.

A4. Spec Section 01351 "Special Procedures for Historic Treatment" pertains only to restored furniture types 'd' and 'e' which are not included in this bid package. Disregard this Spec Section reference.

Q5. Solicitation, Attachment J.2~ Bid Package Scope of Work:

Page 91 states that scope of work includes DIVISION 06, Section 6105, Miscellaneous Carpentry. However, this specs section could not be found in the specification package. Please provide a copy of this section and detail scope if applicable.

AS. Spec Section 061 05 (consisting of two (2) pages are attached.

Q6. Specification Manual, Section 11.130:

Audio Visual Equipment is described in this section. However, the "Total Price Break Down list," on page S, does not provide a line item for this section. Please clarify.

A6. Audio Visual Equipment as specified in Spec Section 11130 is not included in

the bid package scope of work. Disregard this specification sections.

Q7. Specification Manual, Section 11132:

Projection Screens are described in this section. However, the "Total Price Break Down list," on page S, does not provide a line item for this section. Please clarify.

attached for information only.

Q9. In addition to above missing sheet A-S.44, sheets A-S.34 to A-S,43 are also missing from the bid set. Please clarify.

A9. Drawings AS.34 and AS.43 are related to casework furnished by Others.

QIO. Sheet A-S30:

No details or references are provided for casework items No.1 to 6. Please clarify.

Also, in Children's Library No. 000, a T-shaped assembly is shown with type "S" picture book casework units drawn as part of shelving units type "A." This assembly is identified differently on sheet A-S.70. Please clarify.

AIO. A. See the Casework Schedule on AS,4S. The casework schedule gives references to sheet location of details.

B. Our casework plan identifies the area of the picture book displays and other shelving. Martinez & Johnson Architecture labeling on AS.70 is different and only shows a portion of the shelving is labeled as being picture book bins. Hoshide Williams Architecture casework plans are the correct plans. The millwork firm making the picture book displays needs to confirm number of displays that it is providing.

Qll. Sheet A-S.31:

No details or references are provided for casework items No.7 to IS. Please clarify.

Q12. Sheet A-S.32:

No details or references are provided for casework items No. 16 to 19, and no details are provided for shelving end panel "7." Please clarify.

Q14. Sheet A-S.45:

Shelving type "J" is shown as being 66" high, whereas it is shown as being 78" high on sheet A-S.47. Please clarify.

AI4. For Metal Shelving Type J- 78" shown on detail sheet AS.47 is correct.

Discrepancy occurred with Casework Type E as well between the schedule and the details, but the height of 78" was called out on Martinez & Johnson Architecture lower level interior elevations.

QI5. Sheet A-S.70:

Children's Library No. 000, includes an "Early Literacy" desk not identified as a piece of furniture and also not shown on the corresponding casework sheet A-S.30. Please clarify.

A15. ASI-IO: A-S.52, Equipment Schedule, EQ-9.

Q16. Sheet A-S.72:

Conference Room 203, is shown with a 9' table that would leave a remaining passage of about 24". Please verify.

SECTION 06105 - MISCELLANEOUS CARPENTRY

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

A. This Section includes the following:

1. Framing with dimension lumber.

2. Wood blocking, cants, and nailers.

3. Wood furring.

4. Wood sleepers.

5. Plywood backing panels.

1.2 SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: For each type of process and factory-fabricated product.

1. Include data for wood-preservative and fire-retardant treatment from chemical treatment manufacturer and certification by treating plant that treated materials comply with requirements.

B. LEED Submittals: Comply with LEED submittal requirements as specified in Section 01352.

C. Research/Evaluation Reports: For the following, showing compliance with building code in effect for Project:

1. Preservative-treated wood.

2. Fire-retardant-treated wood.

3. Power-driven fasteners.

1.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Forest Certification: For the following wood products, provide materials produced from wood obtained from forests certified by an FSC-accredited certification body to comply - with FSC STO-01-001, "FSC Principles and Criteria for Forest Stewardship":

1. Dimension lumber framing.

2. Miscellaneous lumber.

3. Interior wood trim.

4. Shelving and clothes rods.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 WOOD PRODUCTS, GENERAL

A. Lumber: DOC PS 20 and applicable rules of grading agencies indicated. If no grading agency is indicated, provide lumber that complies with the applicable rules of any ruleswriting agency certified by the ALSC Board of Review. Provide lumber graded by an agency certified by the ALSC Board of Review to inspect and grade lumber under the rules indicated.

1. Factory mark each piece of lumber with grade stamp of grading agency.

2. For exposed lumber indicated to receive a stained or natural finish, mark grade stamp on end or back of each piece.

3. Provide dressed lumber, S4S, unless otherwise indicated.

2.2 WOOD-PRESERVATIVE-TREATED MATERIALS

A. Preservative Treatment by Pressure Process: AWPA C2, except that lumber that is not in contact with the ground and is continuously protected from liquid water may be treated according to AWPA C31 with inorganic boron (SBX).

1. Preservative Chemicals: Acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction and containing no arsenic or chromium.

B. Kiln-dry lumber after treatment to a maximum moisture content of 19 percent. Do not use material that is warped or does not comply with requirements for untreated material.

C. Mark lumber with treatment quality mark of an inspection agency approved by the ALSC Board of Review.

D. Application: Treat items indicated on Drawings, and the following:

1. Wood cants, nailers, curbs, equipment support bases, blocking, stripping, and similar members in connectfon with roofing, flashing, vapor barriers, and waterproofing.

2. Wood sills, sleepers, blocking, stripping. and similar concealed members in contact with masonry or concrete.

3. Wood framing and furring attached directly to the interior of below-grade exterior masonry or concrete walls.

4. Wood framing members that are less than 18 inches above the ground in crawl spaces or un excavated areas.

5. Wood floor plates that are installed over concrete slabs-an-grade.

2.3 FIRE-RETARDANT-TREATED MATERIALS

A. General: Comply with performance requirements in AWPA C20 (lumber) and AWPA C27 (plywood).

1. Use Exterior type for exterior locations and where indicated.

2. Use Interior Type A, High Temperature (HT) for enclosed roof framing, framing in attic spaces, and where indicated.

B. Identify fire-retardant-treated wood with appropriate classification marking of testing and inspecting agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction.

C. Application: Treat all miscellaneous carpentry, unless otherwise indicated.

2.4 DIMENSION LUMBER FRAMING

A. Maximum Moisture Content: 19 percent

B. Other Framing: Construction or No.2 grade and any of the following species:

1. Hem-fir (north); NLGA.

2. Southern pine; SPIB.

3. Douglas fir-larch; WCLIB orWWPA.

4. Mixed southem pine; SPIB.

5. Spruce-pine-fir; NLGA. .

6. Douglas fir-south; WWPA.

7. Hem-fir; WCLIS or WWPA

8. Douglas fir-larch (north); NLGA.

9. Spruce-pine-fir (south); NeLMA, WCLlS, or WWPA.

2.5 MISCELLANEOUS LUMBER

A. General: Provide miscellaneous lumber indicated and lumber for support or attachment of other construction, including the following:

1. Blocking.

2. Nailers.

3. Rooftop equipment bases and support curbs.

4. Cants.

5. Furring.

6. Utility shelving.

B. For items of dimension lumber size, provide Construction or No.2 grade lumber with 19 percent maximum moisture content of any species.

C. For exposed boards, provide lumber with 15 percent maximum moisture content of eastern white pine, Idaho white, lodgepole, ponderosa, or sugar pine; Premium or .. 2 Common (Sterling) grade; NeLMA, NLGA, WCLlB, or WWPA.

D. For concealed boards, provide lumber with 15 percent maximum moisture content and any of the following species and grades:

1. Mixed southern pine, No.2 grade; SPIB.

2. Eastern softwoods, No.2 Common grade; NElMA.

3. Northern species, No.2 Common grade; NLGA.

4. Western woods, Construction or No.2 Common grade; WCLIS or WWPA.

2.6 PLYWOOD BACKING PANELS

A. Telephone and Electrical Equipment Backing Panels: DOC PS 1, Exterior, AC ,fireretardant treated, in thickness indicated or, if not indicated, not less than 1/2-inch nominal thickness.

2.7 FASTENERS

A. General: Where carpentry is exposed to weather, in ground contact, pressurepreservative treated, or in area of high relative humidity. provide fasteners of Type 304 stainless steel.

B. Power-Driven Fasteners: NES NER-272.

C. Screws for Fastening to Cold-Formed Metal Framing: ASTM C 954. except with wafer heads and reamer wings, length as recommended by screw manufacturer for material being fastened.

2.8 MISCELLANEOUS MATERIALS

A. Flexible Flashing: Self-adhesive. rubberized-asphalt compound, bonded to a highdensity. polyethylene film to produce an overall thickness of not less than 0.025 inch.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 INSTALLATION, GENERAL

A. Set carpentry to required levels and lines. with members plumb, true to line, cut, and fitted. Fit carpentry to other construction; scribe and cope as needed for accurate fit. Locate furring. nailers, blocking, grounds, and similar supports to comply with requirements for attaching other construction.

B. Where wood-preservative-treated lumber is installed adjacent to metal decking, install continuous flexible flashing separator between wood and metal decking.

C. Framing Standard: Comply with AF&PA's "Details for Conventionat Wood Frame Construction," unless otherwise indicated.

D. Do not splice structural members between supports, unless otherwise indicated.

E. Comply with AWPA M4 for applying field treatment to cut surfaces of preservativetreated lumber.

F. Securely attach carpentry work to substrate by anchoring and fastening as indicated, complying with the following:

1. NES NER-272 for power-driven fasteners.

2. Table 2304.9.1, "Fastening Schedule," in ICC's International Building Code.

3. Table 23-11-8-1, "Nailing Schedule," and Table 23-11-8-2, "Wood Structural Panel Roof Sheathing Nailing Schedule,n in ICBO's Uniform Building Code.

3.2 PROTECTION

A. Protect wood that has been treated with Inorganic boron (SaX) from weather. If, despite protection, inorganic boron-treated wood becomes wet, apply EPA-registered borate treatment. Apply borate solution by spraying to comply with EPA-registered label.
