1. Dorothy- Dorothy represents the American people.
2. Kansas- Kansas at the time was full of populists who opposed the gold
standard.
3. The Tornado- The tornado is a metaphor for political revolution.
4. The Scarecrow- The scarecrow represents the mid-western farmers.
5. The Tin man- The tin man represents the industrial workers.
6. The Cowardly Lion- The cowardly lion represents William Jennings
Bryan or just politicians in general.
7. Toto- Toto is a reference to prohibitionists(teetotalers) who were allies
of the populists.
8. The ruby slippers- In the original book the slippers were silver and
represented the silver standard.
9. The Yellow Brick Road- The yellow brick road represents the gold
standard.

The Emerald City- The emerald city represents Washington D.C.

The Wizard of Oz- the Wizard of Oz represents the president of
The United States.

The Good Witches- Both the good witches are from the parts of
the country where the populists had the most influence: the Midwest
and South.

The Wicked Witch of the West- The wicked witch of the west
represents the American West.

The Wicked Witch of the East- The wicked witch of the east
represents the banking and industrial interests that were centered in
the west.

Oz- Oz is the abbreviation of ounce, which is the unit of measure
for gold and silver.

The Flying Monkeys- The flying monkeys represent the Native
Americans.
