School Reading Problems
Dr. Madden
Reflection #9
Objective

Lesson #17: Dawson will read with

expression during Turkey Twisters.

Teaching Strategy
Fluency
Tutors began by reading the rules of the
game. There were two piles of cards:
Turkey Twisters and sentences. Each
player took a turn rolling the dice and
following the directions according to the
number rolled. If a player landed on a
rectangle they drew a sentence card and
read it with the voice written inside the
rectangle. If he/she landed on a triangle,
he/she picked up a Turkey Twister card and
read it with a voice of his/her choice.
Each time a player made his/her way
around the board, he/she collected a
feather.

Outcomes
(Descriptive evidence objective was met)
Dawson seemed to love this game because
he loves reading in different voices. This
game was a great way for him to
experiment with reading in different tones
at different speeds and different pitches.
He read fluently, while still having fun.
The only thing that I would have changed
about the lesson was the tongue twisters.
They were a little bit too challenging for
Dawson to read.

Testing took place during this time

for both sessions.
Lesson #18: Dawson will be able to reflect
on personal experiences and memories to
write complete sentences about what he is
thankful for in a Thanksgiving art/writing

Writing
All the pieces to make the turkey were put
in piles on the table. Then, tutors modeled
how the turkey would look when it was
finished. Together, tutors and Dawson

This activity was really fun for our last day

with Dawson. We really got to talk about
different things in our lives that were
thankful for. I got to know more about

activity.

made their own turkeys. Once they were

put together, Dawson was instructed to
write on his turkey things he was thankful
for.

Dawson, and he asked us questions about

our own lives. It was such a great time.
One of the things he wrote that he was
thankful for was for being here. He said
that he was really going to miss us and he
was thankful for us helping him. I will
never forget that moment. I really enjoyed
being able to tutor Dawson this semester.
On another note, Dawson had some
spelling mistakes. These mistakes could
be corrected in future sessions, if we had
any left. I would suggest future tutors to
work with him on endings such as -ily, and
changing some endings when using -ing,
such as Thanksgiving (Dawson spelled it
as Thanksgiveing).

Lesson #17: Dawson will participate in a

frog themed word sort to review
contractions.

Word Study
Rachael started the lesson by going over
what contractions were and provided
several examples on the board. Then, she
provided either a contraction, or the two
words that can make a contraction and
asked Dawson to find either the
contraction or the two words that made the
contraction. Rachael provided examples
until Dawson seemed to grasp the concept.
Then, Rachael explained that Dawson
would participate in a frog themed word
sort where he had to match the
contractions to their meanings. The
contractions were on the table, but the

We had noticed that Dawson had trouble

reading contractions, so we chose to go
over contractions and what they are. The
examples of contractions written on the
board were dont, Im, and havent.
Then, Rachael put the words that make up
each contraction next to it on the board.
Then, when Rachael asked Dawson to help
her find the words that make up each
contraction, he was able to name them.
However, when she asked him to take two
words and make the contraction, he
showed difficulty by saying, I dont
know

meanings were scattered around the room.

He had to match them together correctly,
creating contractions.

Rachael decided to continue with the

decoding of contractions, after that. When
Dawson did the word sort, he was able to
accurately match each contraction with the
two words that make up the contraction.
If I were to have future sessions with
Dawson, I would have focused on creating
contractions instead of decoding them,
since thats what he was having trouble
with. I also would have had him read a
poem or a passage from a book that
contained contractions, so he could see
how they are used in a text.
