beeninterestedinthenursingmostofmylifeandIthinkthisprojectisagreatwaytoexpress
whatIvelearnedandsharethatwiththecommunity.BydoingthisseniorprojectIthinkthis
wouldenhancemyknowledgeofwhatitsliketounderstandhowtostaysafeandcleanfrom
objectsusedinthehospital.IchosetoteachtheHOSAClubsincethestudentsinvolvedwould
liketobeinthemedicalfieldtoo.TeachingtheHOSAClubwillalsoletthemlearnlittlethings
thatareveryimportantinthehospital.ThetopicIllbeteachingistheOSHA(Occupational
SafetyandHealthAdministration)BloodbornePathogenTraining.WithinthistopicIneedto
learnhowtoteachaclass,toexplainthepurposeoftheBloodbornePathogentraining,what
Bloodbornepathogensare,whatmedicalasepsisis,whattodoifthere'sbloodexposure,howto
properlydisposecontaminatedobjects,andhowtoregulatemedicalwaste.

thatIllhavethestudentsdosmallactivitiesandhaveinteractivegameswiththematerial
theyvejustlearned.

ThepurposeoftheOSHABloodbornePathogenTrainingisimportantforpeopletolearn
becauseatonepointintheirlifetheycouldencounterthesituation.
InDecember1991,the
OccupationalSafetyandHealthAdministration(OSHA)issuedtheOccupationalExposureto
BloodbornePathogensStandard.Thisstandardwasdesignedtoprotectnearlysixmillion
healthcareworkersfromtheriskofexposuretopathogenssuchastheHIVandhepatitisB
viruses(Duffy,William).
Byteachingthisclass,thiscanpreventfutureillnessandoneless
persontocatchadisease.Themorepeoplewhohearandlearnaboutthiscantakeprecautions
beforedealingwithabloodsituation.Especiallyiftheyregoingtoworkinthemedicalfield
whentheyreolder,it'smorelikelytoexperiencethis.BylearningtheBloodbornePathogen
Trainingitwillbealifelongpolicythatcanhelpyourselfandothers.

BloodbornePathogensareextremelyinfectiousmicroorganismsthatarecarriedinthe
humanbloodandcancausediseaseinhumans.Openingofawoundbyneedles,razors,or

anythingsharpcouldexposeworkersoranyonetobloodbornepathogens.Thetypesof
bloodbornepathogensarehepatitisB,hiv,malaria,syphilis,andbrucellosis.Bloodborne
pathogenscanbetransmittedbyinfectedhumanbloodandbodilyfluids.

Stationsshouldbekeptcleanedatalltimes,especiallythematerials.Ifnot,therearebound
tobemanytypesofdifferentbacteria.Thetypesofbacteriathatcouldbefoundareviruses,
fungi,andprotists.Thesetypeofgermscancausediseases,sowiththeproperknowledgeof
stayingcleanyoucanpreventgettingadisease.Especiallyifyoureworkinginahospitalyou
mustwearglovesbeforehandlingblood.Afterthatyoumustsanitizeyourhandsandsterilize
yourequipment.Bysterilizingtheequipment,itpreventsthetransmissionofgermsbykilling
themwithheat.Heat

method
of
sterilizing

bacteriological
media,

foods,

hospital

supplies,

and

many

othersubstances(Sterilization).Then,afterthe
patientsprocedureisdoneyoumustcleanupyourworkspacetopreventgermsfromspreading.

Ifyoudoencounterabloodexposureatyourjob,youmustdoeachofthefollowing.
Exposuretobloodbornepathogenscanbeminimizedoreliminatedwhenthedevelopmentofan
exposurecontrolplanaddressesandimplements(BloodbornePathogens).Firstyouhaveto
washyourhandswithsoapandwaterifabloodspilldidoccur.Ifyougotaccidentlyprickedby
oneofthesharpobjects,yougotothefirstaidkitandapplyanyointmentsorbandages.Oryou
cangotothedoctorsiftheincidentwasbad.Afterthatyoumustreporttheincidentandrecordit
andtellyourbossaboutthebloodexposure.

It'simportanttoknowhowtoproperlydisposethecontaminatedobjects.Mostcontaminated
objectsshouldbedisposedinabiohazardbagsinceitgetspickedupfromadifferenttrash
company,nottheregulartrashdisposal.Thecompanieswhichdealinmedicalwastedisposal
areuniqueinthewastemanagementindustry.Theymustmaintainafleetofremovalvehicles
thatusespeciallycontainmentreceptaclessothatthemedicalwasteisnotexposedtotheair,or
atriskforspillingshouldtherebeanaccident(Kukreja,Rinkesh).Ifyouseeanybiohazard
bags,donottouchorleaveanythingnearit.youhavetostorebiohazardbagsinalockedcabinet
andsomewherenoteasilyaccessed.Alsoyouhavetokeeptrackofthebiohazardwastebecause
theinsidecouldbeharmfulsoyoudhavetomakepeopleaware.

Itisalsoimportantwhattypeofobjectsgoinwhattrash.Thetypesoftoolsyouredealing
withshouldbeknownandknowwheretoproperlydisposethem.Urinetestingstrips,tongue
depressors,patientgowns,emptyurinecups,earorthermometerprobecovers,cleandisposable
gloves,andexaminingtablepapershouldbelonginaregulartrashcan.Sharppointedtools,
bloodtubes,razorblades,capillarypipets,syringesandneedlesbelonginasharpscontainer.

mpropermanagementofdiscardedneedlesandothersharpscanposeahealthrisktothepublic
andwasteworkers(DisposalofMedicalSharps).
Andanythingsaturatedwithblood,stitches,
anythingwithbodilyfluidsshouldgoinabiohazardbag.

Ithinkmyseniorprojectwouldbenefitalot.Itwillhelpmegrowintomyfuturecareerand
otherstoo.ByteachingtheOSHABloodbornePathogensstandardpeoplewilllearnalotand
theywillrememberthesehelpfulinformationthatcancarryontotheirlives.Thisstandardcould

preventfutureillnessandthestudentswouldknowhowtodealwithsituationsiftheyever
encounterit.Thematerialcoveredishowtoteachaclass,toexplainthepurposeofthe
BloodbornePathogentraining,whatBloodbornepathogensare,whatmedicalasepsisis,whatto
doifthere'sbloodexposure,howtoproperlydisposecontaminatedobjects,andhowtoregulate
medicalwaste.Hopefullytheyllrememberthisandcanwarnotherstoo.
