SAFETY BULLETIN # 036

SAFE TIRE INFLATION

Changing and inflating tires, especially those from heavy equipment, can be hazardous.
Under pressure, a tire and rim assembly are potentially dangerous and the uncontrolled
release of pressure due to a burst can cause very serious injury. To prevent such
accidental events, follow these basic safety precautions:
1.

Change and inflating tires should always be accomplished per manufacturer's

recommendations, and only performed by qualified and authorized personnel.

2.

Always use a tire cage, safety cables or chains during all initial inflations.

3.

Do not use a heavy hammer to seat lock rings. Damage to the locking lip will
weaken it.

4.

Do not inflate tires with flammable gases.

5.

Never mix rim parts of different manufacture or size. Do not use damaged parts.

6.

Never heat, cut or weld on the wheel rim or rim parts.

7.

When adding air to a mounted tire, do so from a distance, use a long hose with a
self-attaching air chuck. Always stand to one side when inflating tires.
